Have you ever noticed that many of us get YOU'RE and YOUR confused time and time again?

incorrect examples:

"YOUR WAY OFF BASE ON THIS ONE BUDDY!"

"YOUR IN BIG TROUBLE NOW."

"YOUR ON FIRE!"

"YOUR WELCOME!"

"YOUR UP A CREEK WITHOUT A PADDLE!"

"YOUR TOO RICH."

"YOUR RIGHT or YOUR WRONG."

and so on ....

The correct way should be:

"YOU'RE (You are) WAY OFF BASE ON THIS ONE BUDDY!"

"YOU'RE (You are) IN BIG TROUBLE NOW."

"YOU'RE (You are) ON FIRE!"

"YOU'RE (You are) WELCOME!"

"YOU'RE (You are) UP A CREEK WITHOUT A PADDLE!"

"YOU'RE (You are) TOO RICH."

"YOU'RE (You are) RIGHT or YOU'RE (You are) WRONG."

YOUR should be used when you are indicating OWNERSHIP.

"IS THAT YOUR HELICOPTER?"

"YOUR FUEL IS FOAMING!"

"YOUR BLADES ARE OUT OF TRACK."

"IS YOUR HUSBAND AT HOME?"

"YOUR LIPOS ARE ON FIRE!"

It would be helpful when we teach our children these things as well. It helps us get ahead in this competitive world.

You're doing yourself a service when you learn that your world is filled with endless knowledge and you pursue it. Have fun!

Seriously though, there is a definite hacking of the language sometimes. I was always half decent at spelling, grammer etc. so I guess I notice it as well. Then again, my math skills suck, so I let it go.

You're right! I believe that technology has made hacking of the English language (or any langauge) a normal, everyday occurance. Those Blackberrys and Instant Messaging things rush people to shorten or hack everything for the sake of convenience and time.

"Where R U?"

"How duz it cum in2 play 4 U?"

There may come a time when many people will write the same way that they type to communicate. That is if they have any writing skills at all at the end of this century.

By the way...I suck at Math too.

synonyms, contractions, antonyms, adverbs, etc....

We all tend to get lazy when writing, and while penmanship and basic sentence structure were taught and you could fail these courses. Today I find that schools are a bit lax in offering, quite frankly, adequate oversight and education in the english (US version) language.

OK, rant over.

Thank you for your consideration in this regard.

No ranting here. You are correct in all respects. My Mother was taught Latin when she was in grade school. They would never do that today but the system is lacking.

I am not really arguing your point, but the English language does change. From Shakespeare to the present it has changed dramatically. I imagine that over the years there has always been someone who is saying that the younger generation is butchering the language. I think the changes happen whether we like it or not.

I am waiting for the Lexicon of Text Messaging short hand to make it into the New Oxford Dictonary. I think it will be the end of civilization as we know it. <G>

Just imagine a child growing up on Instant Messaging and Texting (New word?), writing a paper.

IMHO UR.....

Shall we see if we can continue this story only with the shorthand being used today in text and instant messaging?

I know that when my college nephews text me I have to call and ask them what they mean.

I believe my writing skills have improved with all the typing done here and elsewhere, but the penmanship has gone down the tubes over the years.

The other day it occurred to me that the only time I put pen to paper anymore is to write a check, and even that happens less and less these days what with online banking, etc. The longhand is barely legible anymore -- gotta focus and go slowly to write a decent looking sentence.
