Noticed some interest in this area...thought I might share my experience.

I suggest starting with the JB read...the whole document is a great read and Page 6 has the paint suggestions (right side...red column).

http://www.audacitymodels.com/white...vR50-screen.pdf

My Orange & Blue canopy was done via the rattle can...now 130+ flights and ½-dozen rough landings.

My steps:

Trim canopy, drill holes for windscreen, remove windscreen and reinstall windscreen when clear coat is cured.

Dishwasher...I use Cascade, heated water & no heat dry (or just pull at the end of the rinse cycle).

Sand (I've used 400 on the rough spots & 1500 wet...prefer the 1500 wet).

Flame it...this is a trick!
I use the standard Benzene propane tank from the hardware store and lightly & QUICKLY lick the surface with the flame.
I test to see if water will "stick" to the surface in a smooth fashion...if it beads-ups like a waxed car...repeat. I suggest practice on the piece you removed for the windscreen before jumping onto the actual canopy.

Adhesion promoter.

White (or black) base coat…let dry to full cure for 5-7 days. The paint needs to completely bond with the plastic…if you rush the cure…you may have to live with less than acceptable finish…or strip it with M.E.K. (Methyl Ethyl Ketone…nasty stuff)

1500 wet…ever so lightly!

Mask, I use blue painter masking tape from the local hardware and automotive pin stripe for the long flowing lines.

Rub with Tack-cloth (Testors)

Spray color.

Wait for it to dry.

Repeat last four steps for each color…and mask off everything!!! As JB says…”You’ve been warned!”

Let the paint completely cure for 5-7 days before final sanding and clear coat.

Lightly wet-sand with 1500 grit…if you want it “gentlemen’s club skin smooth”

Spray a compatible Fuel proof clear... test on another piece first… so not to ruin all your time consuming work.

Let it rest till the clear is cured and go fly it!

The other Tiger canopy on the Pantera is my latest…Testors Aztek Airbrush, Spazstiks paints, 30 gallon upright compressor, regulator, old TV box for paint booth, 100+ CFM bath fan with 4” duct outside with small furnace filter on the intake of the fan (keeps from painting the side of your house/shop), fluorescent light inside the "box”, $30 active carbon cartridge Respiratory face mask…to keep your brain cells for alternate forms of slow death.

Another great read is here…
http://canopyfx.com/tips.htm
A friend has 2 of his canopies from Canopy FX…they are excellent! But that Fiberglass gets rough after a few crashes!

I can't stress enough the fan to remove fumes, mask & rubber latex gloves...it will keep the procedure enjoyable and headache free...and the Mrs. off your back from the stench of wet paint.

ALSO...THIS STUFF IS FLAMMABLE...be smart and you're on your own!

Have Fun!!!

lotta ins, lotta outs

The cool thing about fiberglass is you do not have to electrotreat or flame the fuse. just a bunch of sanding!

Clear Windscreens???

JB,
The painted windscreen was from my "seasoned" tiger.
I was playing around with a mirror airbrush paint...designed to go behind a clear lexan car body.
I placed it on top of our windscreen...polished-up real nice (just like a mirror!!!) before I shot it with clear...then BAM!!!... instant metallic primer gray. The mirror paint is to be backed only...

So I ask...any clear plastic windscreens out there in your inventory of things that didn't make it to the "Production Line"?

Pantera canopy just got sanded is going in the booth...now!

thanks,
The Dude II

white-russian anyone???
