Other › Heads Up: Medusa BEC's in/out wires labeled backwards, caused major damage !

I recently bought two Medusa BEC's, I bought one two or three weeks ago and just received the second one today. BOTH of them have the input and output wires labeled backwards.

If you're installing one don't assume it's labeled correctly. CHECK it somehow.

It totally destroyed a brand new gyro and a swash servo in less than two seconds. There was a loud bang with white smoke pouring from the Medusa BEC and gray smoke pouring from the swash servo housing.

I don't trust the other two servos or receiver on my new T-rex 600 after being subjected to that kind of trauma. I've already re-bought the gyro and servos, to a tune of roughly $500. I still have to get a new receiver so it'll end up being about a $600 manufacturing mistake. It's hard to believe one sticker can do this much damage. The story I got on the phone was that they had a relatively new employee involved in the manufacturing process somehow.

Medusa won't cover ANY of the damage. They did say they had sent me a new BEC to replace the mis-labeled one.

When I first spoke with the Medusa folks they seemed unaware of the problem until I called and sent them photos of my char-broiled BEC. I also called a vendor and they checked a couple of new BEC's they had in stock and they both were labeled backwards as well. I was told Medusa was calling their distributers about it.

I had hoped Medusa would help me out with at least the one totally dead servo and gyro but no dice. They first claimed I'd modified the BEC, which I guess is somewhat true; I did add connectors to both ends of the wires and I added a ferrite ring.

Then they said I should have noticed the reversed labeling since the instructions are in the package. In truth I didn't read the instructions, there's only two wires marked "Battery" and "Load." Being an electrical engineer it seemed pretty simple and I've wired up at least half a dozen in the past without any problems. In my defense, their QC didn't catch it either and they see them every day.

I was kind of surprised at their lack of sympathy and support, I've been a pretty loyal Medusa customer for the last couple of years, I have a few of their motors in my little T-rex 450's.

I know everything you buy says they're not responsible for consequential damages but this just smells bad. On so many levels.

I ran a little voltage test on the one I received today. (I ordered another BEC the same day the first one went into self destruct mode, it took me a day to find the root cause of the problem.) I'll add a pic or two.

If you made it this far, thanks, I feel a 'little' better after venting, but I really don't want anyone else to have to go through this. It is VERY VERY hard on the wallet.

this has got to be the biggest small claims court "slam dunk" in the history of modern law.

Do a BBB complaint (can do online), and file a small claims court case (you should be able to file locally since that is where the damage happened).

The BBB complaint alone though will make the rectify the issue.

Wow! No thats customer service! That is a very unprofessional way to handle a customer complaint on an obvious manufacturing defect. I have also read posts suspecting mislabeled motors as well. I'll now think twice before I buy another medusa product.

Very poor customer service in my opinion.
When the Hanger 9 Edge 540T wings were
snapping faster than grama's bones after
falling down on ice. Horizon covered all
radio gear and damaged engines including
a new kit if you sent them the remains!!!
Did Medusa ask to look at your damaged BEC
and radio gear???

I am in the market for a new BEC for my
Hirobo Lepton EX, after hearing of this
incorectly manufacterd BEC and the lack
of any customer support I will not be
trusting my Futaba radio gear and heli to any
Medusa products now or in the future.
Sorry Medusa you lost a customer due to your
lack of support.

I hear Castle Creations has a new very small
BEC that is due out soon. I'll check it out
at the Toledo Show.

I have to say, their response was eye opening. This isn't the market that you hose people in. All our connections are online..

Good luck Medusa, guess how many views this is going to get.

Hi James, I was wondering if your helis had icecicles hanging on them last week. I heard Houston only has one ice scraper in the entire town.

I appreciate the offer to email or call but I really don't think it would do any good. I've spoken with three of the people there numerous times and had several emails back and forth.

The message I got from them was basically that they goofed but it's still my fault, or if it isn't my fault it doesn't matter, they're still not replacing any damaged parts beyond their smoking BEC.

Believe me, I tried. One of their distributers who knows me even approached them on my behalf and they still wouldn't offer to cover any of the damage.

I would have thought that they would have thanked me for catching it so quickly. A couple of days ago they mentioned I'm the only one who has had this problem so far. Maybe they caught it quickly enough that no one else will get hit by it.
Bluethunder: Did Medusa ask to look at your damaged BEC

No, I suspect they don't need the damaged BEC, identical BEC's that have the same problem were still in inventories. They have not asked for the radio gear, they're a LOOOOOONG way from caring about my radio gear.

Wow, pretty bad situation at first, and almost worst is their response. Take em' to small claims court and get your money back! They even admitted that they mis-labeled it, they just lost the case for themselves.

I'd definately get a claim in, thats what there product liability insurance covers they could have simply put in a claim for you as a goodwill gesture but you'll have to sue them instead, i wouldn't hesitate.

I run a Medusa motor in my little Rex, and have a BEC from them. While I won't go so far as to remove the Medusa equipment and toss it, I think it's safe to say that when it's time for replacements, Medusa Research parts will not be filling those spots.

lakespinner2 when you modified the leads was there no connectors at all on the bec? As all the pic's I've seen of bec's fron most manufacturers have the JR plug type connector fitted on the load side and notting on the battery side as so many people are using different types of connectors.

I had a bad pre-made cable from EC3 (Horizon).

It was a battery series cable which they switched + and -

It costed me a CC85HV and 2 x flightpower 6s1p 3700's
They offered me a new cable worth $8.
I didnt take it, then they offered me $20 off if I replaced the equipment...

Now a days I rather do my own cables.

WOW----not a good thing to hear.

I am ready to drop anything they offer without hesitation. The world of R/C doesn't need a company like this.

I sent a supporting email linking this topic and asking them to do the right thing. Hopefully they will publicly rectify all of this so all of us customers can feel confident in them.

Keep us up to date on the outcome of this damaging problem.

Also, keep the evidence and don't send back the BEC right away. Dissect it with photographs so they can see the mistake and keep the original until they have reimbursed you. They will know what all will get fried by that type of error.

Good Luck

I do hope they read their mail.

I also sent them a link to this thread with a not so friendly reminder that we in this hobby are a small community and word spreads fast. If I were them...I'd be on the phone tonight with Lakespinner trying to fix this before it blows up in their face (if it's not too late already).

i have bought their products in the past and am another customer they just lost bc of their service in this situation. when are these companies going to get it through their heads that customer service, especially in a specialized industry like this, is everything. one of the main reasons i buy futaba and OS equipment(or anything else serviced by Hobby Services) is because their customer service is amazing. they even go as far as to replace my worn out equipment under warranty at no cost even though there was nothing faulty with it(as was the case with my hyper 50 i just sent out bc it was tired after being beat on all season long and they rebuilt the entire thing at NO cost).

i'd love to see a boycott of Medusa products by all the pilots on RR. maybe it will take something like that to change their tune.
