Hit the ground today with the SA!!!
I went up about 20 feet, I did a text book static flip, was going to do some inverted hovering..................This is the Third time on two different helis. I forgot to hit the IDLE UP switch!!
With only 20 foot up I could not save it.
Maybe $80 worth of trouble this time .

How many times does it take for a fool to learn!!!

This hobby does attract a lot of us fools, lol! That's why I practice all moves up HIGH until I get them. Low = crash for me.

I was Spektrum when Spektrum wasn't cool

Always flip to idle up as soon as you take off. Make it a habit so you don't have to think about it. Set your idle up throttle curve higher than normal mode so it's obvious which mode you're in.

So you were in idle up for the flip, but you switched back? Why?

Feel your pain!

Did the same just before Christmas. An upgrade opportunity so Santa bought me a carbon fiber frame set for my XL.

Having said that, I was in the inverted part of the flip at about 30 feet with NO power and NO head speed and then in the ground, longish grass, and I must say the damage was minimal.

Still did the upgrade though

Adjust your radio so you can't take off in normal mode, fixes the problem.

Apparently more than three... Sorry man $hit happens...Once I went the hit the idle up, got mixed up and ended hitting the throttle hold, in the few seconds it took me to realize what was going on, that thing dropped like a rock!...you can imagine how that ended......

That is the exact reason why i set my normal throttle curve low...around 60%. That way I know before I even go to do anything that my throttle is low and I need to switch to idle up. I'll tell you something really dumb....try landing in idle up and giving full negative to shut the throttle off just to find out that its 100 throttle at -12 pitch

Set your normal throttle curve to 0-0-25. Just don't flip the switch back to normal while inflight

I don't think I would do that to the throttle curve. If you ever flip back to normal before you land in idle up your going to be rebuilding for a bad landing......

Hey Tom,
I sure agree with what you said. I start the spool up in Normal but switch to Idle1 at about half collective before lifting off. Sure saves a lot of repairs. I never fly in Normal mode using it only for setup purposes.

I did this same thing yesterday with my new 450se, Ive got the throt. curve set to be at about 90percent to hover, switched to normal and landed made swash arf adjustment to make it quicker and went backup and desided to hover inverted about 6feet high and when I went to negetive I lost head speed and I knew what I hadnt done. (Didnt switch to stunt 1 or 2 I was still in normal) Couldnt recover in time and did manage to get it pretty much skids down and wham! Blades(New Align CF's, Main shaft, spindal, landing gear, and plastic bottom plate. About 40.00 but she was flying again today.

I only use normal mode for takeoff and switch to idle 1 promptly. Learn to fly this way and you can prevent this from happening again in most cases

I spool up in normal... lift off in idle 1... land in idle 1... switch back to normal mode and power down...

There are lots of ways of to do this... it's just a matter of learning a habit..

Actually my normal throttle curve is 0-70-70-70-70 and my idle up 1 and 2 are 70-70-70-70-70.

I only power up in normal mode, then flip the throttle hold switch to on, then switch to idle up 1, then flip the throttle hold off and spool up. I will fly and land in idle up 1. After landing I flip the throttle to on and the flight mode back to normal.

I never actually spool up or fly in normal mode.

I had not one, not two, not even three such stupid crashes. I HAD SIX!!

Now I spool up only in Idle up mode (soft start on the ESC). My Normal curve has zero trottle all the way - so when I power up, I can actually check linkages, pitch, etc. Also turning my idle up off equal my throttle hold.

Yes, I'm a slow learner.

Use a good governor, start up in normal, move throttle to mid point (zero pitch), as rotor spools up switch to idle1 and go fly. When landing, switch to TH just before or at landing. No screwing around with switch flipping when flying, no confusion as to mode you are in! Went to this method after my 1st incident of 3D attempt in normal mode. Not a happy occurance!
