after posting and reading all the other zenoah 231 motor settings i wondered how you guys came up with those #'s? i set my low by adjust it at a low idle until the motor rpms statrt to climb. i find peak and then turn the screw back out about 1/8 turn. but im at 3/4 turns and it idles the best and i see sufficant smoke.

only you have the power to make no difference!

There are a lot of variables at work here, but it sounds to me like you are going to toast your motor at 3/4 turn for low needle. Set it at 1-3/8 to start (to be safe) and adjust the idle by opening the butterfly. The low needle is most effective at hover, which is where you will make your tuning changes, idle is not effective for tuning the low needle. I completely ignore the "quality" of the idle when tuning, i.e. how it sounds or smokes, I adjust the butterfly until I get a good idle speed and then all low-needle tuning is done by hovering and listening to the sound of the engine and observing vibration. A well-tuned Zenoah will emit very little smoke. During the process of low-needle tuning, the position of the butterfly to maintain a good idle will change, so it is necessary to keep adjusting things.

i have my butterfly set to cut off the motor if i take all my trim out of it. but i guess i can try that method. when i made the adjustment it was getting hard to start and didnt want to idle. now it pops right off and idles much better. i do run 40:1 oil mix so that may make a difference also.

Open it back up

by 1/2 turn and try to hover. You should be in the range of around 1 1/4 with that oil content for a smooth hover.

3/4 is WAAAY too lean, don't run it at that setting any more.

Do as Andrew says -- adjust the throttle opening to keep an idle when you richen it and keep adjusting the throttle opening while you are adjusting mixture to maintain an idle. The last thing you need to adjust after the mixture is set is the throttle opening for a good idle.
