currently my predator has a CSM 540 gyro. all my friends are giving me poopoo over it. its about 5 years old but still rock solid.
out side of that gyro im a JR guy. dont know much of futaba.
so they are all telling me i need a to get a gy502 or a 601. will that work well in the gasser?

my style
lots of flips / rolls and piroutting flips/ rolls. some inverted and full throttle inverted climb outs with some straight out some piro'.
i bought a controller for the 502 (mistake) & plan to buy a complet 502 tomorrow.

thanks for your input

only you have the power to make no difference!

LOL Who is giving you all this crap?

In all seriousness though, I fully trust the Futaba Gyros and have used them forever...in the same breath I wouldn't hesitate to recommend you try one! All of my old buddies in the UK got rid of their CSM gyros for the sheer extreme performance of the Futaba Gyros. Nothing but the best for such a nice heli IMHO

Consider what we are comparing here though...Technology has come a long way in the last 5 years.

Hi eyeflyhelis

If you are happy with the 540 then I really don't see why you should change. However, if you do want to change and as you have had good service from the 540 perhaps you should consider a CSM SL720. I guess you are currently running an 8700G servo and if so I would suggest you retain that. The SL720 has selectable frame rates and supports 250 fps as default (the 8700G needs 250 fps and will not run at the 285 fps of the 401 etc). Were you to change servos in the future the SL720 has an option that will optimise for it (1520 or 760us 250, 285, or 333 fps)

The 720 is used by Ducan Osbourn the 2005 3D Master as well as Dave Nolan (current Irish FAI champion) and Dave Fisher (current UK FAI champion).

There are PDF downloadable manuals etc for the 720 on the rcmodels.org/csm web page. If you would like to know more please let me know.

Best regards

Colin (CSM)

And Futaba have yet to catch up - where is the PC interface for instance? And yes, having the interface really does make a difference.

SL720 for me - simply superb performance.

WHOAH since it makes that big of a difference I guess I'll need to go out and buy a high speed computer with a Parallel port and 3.5" floppy drive! I think I'll stick with my digital Futaba since it has such a pretty LCD

Hi dhollein

Perhaps you are a little out of date with how things are with CSM these days - the code is distributed on mini CD and web download and you have the choice of USB or LPT interfaces.

The PC interface does give you access to a lot more parameters than you get on other gyros. While not vital in straightforward tailrotor applications it comes into its own with slightly non-standard situations (camera stabilisation, flybarless rotor heads, and even optimisation for micro electric helis) and for people who want to go the extra mile to wring the last ounce of performance out of everything.

Best regards

Are you kidding? You have a gyro that is 5 years old and still rock solid? That’s an eye opener to me. Just out of curiosity, are your friends flying your machine?

My suggestion and it is only a suggestion; don’t buy anything yet. Download each manual and see which one you would be comfortable with. Secondly, it really doesn’t matter what we (or your friends) think . It only matters what you think and how comfortable you feel about the products you are using.

Dont. The 502 is no better than the 540.
lf you want to upgrade you have two ways to go.
720 or 611.
Never use JR and gyro in the same sentance.

Flybars. Who needs `em.

i've got 401's in my t-rex but that was due to size restrictions. i didnt think it would be a good gyro for a large heli. dont remember anyone ever saying they use it in one.
& yes 5 years and rock solid. but my predator is a $1500 ship and gyro is 5 years old so i'm starting to get nervous.
so far no signs of age except for me

Umm. No moving parts in there so who knows how long these things will last. l guess the servo would be the thing to watch. The 401s are ok but wont hold any better than the one you`ve got. lf you`ve made your mind up to get rid spend a bit more and get one of the top two, you cant get better than the best.

Flybars. Who needs `em.

Gyro

eyeflyhelis
Im running a CSM 540 in both of my gassers also. One with a fut 9205 servo, the other with a HiTech 5925. Both are rock solid, can't see changing. The 540 seems to match up to almost any servo.
