is it the tail drive gear under the main gear or the smaller gear that is attached to the tail drive pulley that determines the ratio. In other words, does the tail drive gear under the main gear have a different tooth count to change the ratio or is it the smaller gear connected to the tail drive pulley that has a different tooth count?

anyone know?

Well, actually, both gears are different. For the SE-style reduction gears, the large gear under the main gear is smaller diameter, and the small gear hooked to the tail pulley is larger diameter. If only one gear was different diameter, it wouldn't mesh with the other gear anymore.

Well let me ask then; I have an SA and it has white gears everywhere. I've read about a better blue main gear and a tail reduction gear system (and maybe one for the tail shaft) I haven't been able put it all together in my head yet and am confused on what goes with what and what I should get. For the sake of arguement I think I'll go with the new Align blue main gear, but where do I go from there? Any part numbers or pics?

Let's complicate this by saying I am running the SE Blue reduction gear on the tail pulley with the NEW Align white main gear and autorotation gear without any problems. So much for color coding.

the new main gear comes with a tail drive reduction gear on it. the only difference that i could see was that the new tail drive gear had 6 spokes instead of 5 spokes.

Count the number of gear teeth on the plastic tail gear front of the boom under the belt dri.

We counted the teeth on the foreward tail drive gear (small one under the front tail belt pulley block) it has 25 teeth on it for the newer reduction tail drive.

On my older machine it is only 22 teeth on the gear so the tail spins faster so I will soon swap it out for the newer slower tail drive. Reason is motors are spinning more head speed and more powerful so need to slow down the tail rpm some and the gyro will be able to have the gain turned back up higher some and hold better and work better with the new BLACK BAT WING style tailblades.
