One thing that I can tell you from first hand experinece do not try your autorotations on a sandy beach.(if ya do watch the tail, if the heli sinks at all, it will) The tail throws the the sand directly into the back of your heli.

Put down some old heavy carpet, or better yet something that is elevated to land on. You can always water the area down a bit prior to flying.

A friend of mine has made a "landing pad" about 4 feet across. It's round and weighted on the edge all the way round. It is made out of canvas, but he has it coated with some sort of rubberizing stuff that penetrated the fabric. Works really well.
