Well, the youngun brought home a few peices of homework today. She asked mom for some help, then when she couldent help, I was the next in line.

She approached me with a peice of paper that had a list of about ten semi-easy questions that a basic 2nd grader should be able to figure out with a little thought.......except one.

I have been racking my brain on this one and cant seem to come up with a logical awnser.

Here is the question......

Steve has these coins. Write this money amount in two ways. ___ ___

(Underneath this question is a pictre of some coins...... one dime, three nickles, and four pennies.)

I know this equals 29 cents, but how the heck are you supposed to write it down in two ways? My guess would be .29 (with a cents sign in front) and $0.29. How the hell else are you supposed to do this????

This might be the most simple thing in the world, but I am simply stuck. (It's been a long day)

PROVE ME STUPID!!!!

Thanks,

Joe

I thought of that, but it simply dosent give the space for a written word(s). It gives two spaces that are about an inch long each out to the right side right after the question.

A second grade homework question requires second grade level thinking and answer! No trick questions. You're initial answer is probably right!

Another way to find out is to go back into the book. Homework reflects what was reviewed currently, and is usually in a section or chapter. But sometimes you have one of those teachers that like to see how good a student retains information.

Let us know what the answer is

Ok, 35.2945 yen it will be. Seriously. She wrote it down.

I made sure the rest of it was right so if it's one wrong, at least it made the teacher smile a little bit. I honestly don't think it could be wrong because it dosent give any details of what kind of awnser.....just two kinds.

Thanks guys! I'll let you all know what comes of the awnser. Wrong, right or dosent count......one of the three.

Whirlyspud, I wonder if we will get a phone call tomorrow?

I'll let you guys know.

Thanks again,

Joe

Baddraptor, fractions aren't used yet. I would highly doubt that would be correct, but very plausible.......like a yen amount would be correct as well.....go figure!

Captin, you are probably exactly correct. I will make sure she writes that one down for a third awnser if there is room. Gotta do that in the morning tho, she already hit the sac about an hour ago.

Thanks alot guys, you all have beens somewhat helpfull.

No wonder we have to go to all these "GRADUATION" events every year when our kids are in grade school.

Which is worse, ignorance or apathy? I don't know and I don't care!

Sounds to me that they are prepping the kids for the day when they have no other job except for mickey D's or taco smell when the computerised cash boxes go to hell!
take a look on their faces when you give them correct change!

Smile! people will wonder what you're up to!!

Math

Is this the "Everyday Math" series, by chance?

As a 4-6 grade teacher, I can assure you that the question is simply trying to get your child to think of money in a mathematical sense:

29 Cents
$0.29
$.29
29/100
29% of $1
2.9% of $10
.29% of $100
"Twenty Nine Cents" would be the most common answer, as most math series want students to practice reading and writing math terms. This is essential for interpreting test questions and data when participating in annual standardized tests.

Also, answers such as $1 minus $0.71 or 1.00-.71 are HIGHLY encouraged.

Basically this is a way to help kids make connections between math skills they are taught throughout the year...decimals related to fractions, related to ratios, related to decimal place values, etc.
