What have I messed up now?

DX7, GY401 with 9254 mounted in the servo tray, gain sensing plugged into gear,
input screen GEAR>GEAR
(PMIX3)
GEAR>GEAR ON
RATE: +60
-100
SW: ON
OFFSET:0

This way I use the gear switch to cylce between rate and heading hold. I always set the switch to heading hold before turning on the radio.

PROBLEM
I turn on the radio, then heli and after everything initializes the servo starts to creep slowly off center...takes about 3 or seconds and ends up about 20 or 30 degrees off center (or start-up center) and I have noticed when hovering the creep seems to happen, I have to keep correcting.

Does it creep when the engine is running only? If so vibration or a tight set of leads to the gyro could be causing it

does it creep when you temporarily connect another servo (digital or analog) to the gyro? I had a 401 which drifted after being crashed once.

do you have any trim in your tail. subtrim or stick trim. that will sometimes cause it to creep

HMMMMM...seem to remember adding some trim last weekend while trying to kill the problem, but it was happening prior to that. The creep happens on the bench with the engine off as well. The trim didn't have an effect so I should reset it to 0 right?

take subtrim and stick trim out and turn heli on and see if it still does it. do you use heading hold? i center my arm in normal mode and adjust the tail rod then turn it to heading hold. if it still creeps then you can use trim to stop it but shouldnt be needed

Thanks, Nappy I'm wondering if the delay pot could have an effect. With that servo it should be set to 0 right?

Why do you use a Pmix set to gear to gear?

Make sure you actually have control over gain channel. It sounds like you may still be running the gyro at 100%.

I have another gyro that does the same thing - Whichever direction I have the servo reversed in is the direction it will drift - However high I have the gain set is how far the servo will deflect - Only does it in HH mode - I chucked it in a junk drawer and installed a different gyro - I dug it back out to test it again during this post and it still does it - It was my second of that gyro that malfunctioned on me - The first had a bad connection and LHS replaced it and the second developed the drift after a crash - I'm gonna have to stock up on some 2100Ts I guess -

But turn that PMIX off as you don't need it to do what you're doing - You already have the Gear channel assigned to the Gear switch.

Mine creeps if i move the heli slightly while the gyro is initialising. I thought it was a million different things, but it was actually quite simple in the end.

Thanks Chaos. I did redo the set-up and inhibit the mix. I have simplified things by going back the using the gyro sensing function on the gear channel...it's a long story...we'll see if it works better next time I get out to play.

It would be simpler and more practical to just leave gain control on the Gear switch like you had it only without the PMIX rather than use the Gyro Sense function -

Plug the gyro sense lead into the RX GEAR channel -

Assign switches:
                                AUX     GEAR
                                AUX     GEAR

Adjust the Gain via the GEAR Travel Adjust while toggling the GEAR switch.

Does it lose tail authority when you do piro funnels, chaos, reversals or piro snakes??? If not, just fly it...

Hell,I don't know. What's a piro funnel? I'm lucky to drive it around in circles!

What's the red LED on the gyro doing when the creep is going on? Should be on solid if in HH mode.

Check some of the usual items -- mounting tape going bad, revolution mixing enabled in your TX when in HH mode, acceleration mixing enabled in your TX in HH mode (both should be off or disabled), you've moved the rudder trim after the gyro is initialized in HH mode (bad), your rudder trim is different when switching to different flight modes (bad).

Nope,
Nope,
Nope,
Bingo, trimmed the rudder the other day after initializing and during hover. I never switch to FM 1&2 cuz I'm scart to.

No, I don't know what it is, I think I messed with the delay a couple flights ago and maybe the gain on the gyro itself. I'm just gonna set it up from scratch again this weekend. I may not even have the yaw squared away in rate mode.

There is no gain on the gyro itself and delay isnt going to do anything for you it should be set to 0 unless you are using a cheap servo.

The limit pot on the gyro should be adjusted in rate mode and set so that you have the most throw you can get without binding the servo.

Also ensure that your rudder end points are equal and set to 100/100

And lastly, as DK said, watch the light, if its doing a double flash when it starts drifting you are getting a rudder input from somewhere.
