Out of the last 15 to 17 flights I have had the belt break 3 times. about 5 plus flights per belt.
I replaced both plastic gears front and rear with metal.
Keep the belt tension where the manual shows-depresses in about a 1/3 of the space between the belt.
The rear tail assembly is stock plastic with new metal gear.
What do I need to do to fix this?
Post belt breakage shows the belt wedges between the rear gear and case. I think this happens after the belt breaks though, as I cant see it happening prior to the break, but who knows.
Should I run a loose fit belt? or?

try removing the idler pulley. its not really an idler pulley becaue the belt doesnt change direction. its main purpose is to increase the wrap of the belt on the tail pulley. the only thing it does is cause belts to break. from your description, you could also run your belt a hair looser. a good test for belt tension testing is to run your headspeed up in idle up with zero pitch and then hit throttle hold and let it spool down. it should take about 20 seconds or so to spool down from 2700 rpm or so give or take 5 seconds. finally, make sure you are lubing your belt. some use WD40, some use triflow, and some use silicone spray or white lithium grease.

Stupidity can be cured. Ignorance is for life!

be sure to keep that belt loose! Seem to break alot less belts that way. I use lithium grease as a belt lube..

I run the belt much more loose (can touch the sides together with moderate pressure), never had one slip on the Trex, even with rapid tail inputs.

Temperature changes will affect belt tension, so check just before flying. Colder outside will result in the belt getting tighter as the heli acclimates, in my experience.

do yourself a favor and get these belts. They are made by Gates and are a much better belt then the align. When i broke the align belt, it rode up on the back pulley and snapped it. I then got these and have not had any trouble since.

The align belts are very week to begin with. The broke one I had only had maybe 15-20 flights on it. Set loose. There were parts of the belt where I could just slight tug on it and it would snap. The other parts where stronger, but not by a lot. I thought maybe the parts where it broke easy the teeth on the gear cut thru, but after going over the entire belt, I could not see anything diffrent. Just bad quality control.

any way, here is the belts. about 3/4 of the way down.

I also upgraded the rear "idler" pulley with the Helimax pulley that has the guides on the side.

Thanks everyone for all the good advice.
Set my belt up much looser, lubed it and an going to order some belts by Gates
update----------got about 10 flights on new lubed, loose fit align belt now and no problems.
Gonna put the Gates belt on when it arrives. Looks like I was running mybelt too tight.
The loose fit belt worksjust great, even though visually it appears too looseand would slip a cog.

My SA belt broke twice when I first got it in the air.
It turned out to be the plastic tail housing the belt was rubbing inside the housing and cutting a groove in it .
I got a new plastic housing ......no more troubles.
I got about 150 flights on the same belt now.
Just was not molded right im guesing.

I just got a new belt, do you have to take the tail case apart to get it on the tail gear?

Keep the belt loose such that it ALMOST touches the other side of the belt when you push it with a pen.

i will never run an align belt again. i use the 397t belts from helidirect which are HALF the price of the align ones and hte quality is amazing. I run 2800hs and beat the hell out of my rex in the air. my belts lasted 30 flights at the most and the tension was perfect. every once in a while i'd get an align that lasted a long time bc i got lucky and got a good belt, which shows how bad the QC on hte belts is. since switching to the helidirect belt, i havent had to change it in a crash yet. its awesome. gives me the confidence to push even harder bc u know the belt isnt going to snap in the air like an align one. HIGHLY recommended. i bought 3 bc of the price, but dont even need the spares bc this one is lasting forever.

Just replaced my belt.

The difference is unbelievable, my previous belt must have been really bad.

The heli is now much more stable, 10x quieter and the tail holds beautifully!

I've not seen a lot of variation on it myself. Practically everyone says to run it as pictured by Casey several replies up... with the sides almost touching when slight pressure is applied.
