Anyone using the Samsung Blackjack? I am looking to upgrade to a new all-in-one PDA/media player/phone. I like it because it has Windows 5.0. I do not like Palm OS. Any pros/cons? I have read that it is very slow to load applications. Is this true? How does the small buttons close together affect the use of it? Are there any protective cases or accessories out for it yet? I appreciate any feedback you can give.

I had it for two days. I tried to convince myself I needed it and I needed to pay an extra $50 a month reqiured by cingular for it to function. It was fun for a while. Kinda like Steward from MAD TV showing off to my freinds. "hey look what I can do" But in the end it was just a cool thingy nothing life changing.

I have it, had for about 3 days. There are many reasons to have the blackjack or any smart phone (Treo, Blackberry, etc.) Almost all the reasons I have found are business related.

Getting corp email, while on the road, carrying business contacts with you, small research on the web. Mostly business related. It's the only form factor that appealed to me. I have been carrying both a phone and and IPAQ for a long time now. This merges all these technologies better than other sources.

Mostly I bought this for business not personal toy playing.

Now the real reason, IRC with my heli junkies so I can keep up.

It is very nice, battery life is ok, not spectacular.

If your corp can subsidize some of the cost go for it otherwise punt.

So, it won't work with the 'normal' Cingular unlimited data plan that's like $29.99/month??

I HAD a Razr until I ran it through a wash cycle. I guess I can just get another one for $59.99. It served me fine.

I know that I had to get a different data plan, I need to see if the other plan was turned off, I am not sure about the data plan issue.

Well, did you compare it to the new Palm Treo 750 with Windows? It is quite a bit more expensive than the Blackjack though.

Wife has a Treo with Palm. I didn't look at the treo, form function not compact enough for me. The Blackjack is also a comprise until the I-phone from apple comes out.

I see. Well, I can't seem to work my way out of Cingular's contracts, so I have to make sure I can live with a phone for 2 years! I don't have the luxury of swapping everytime a cool new phone comes out!

I carried the blackjack for a month until my 8525 came in. Despite what they tell you, you can use any data plan with the blackjack. I used the MediaMax plan for $19. Just log into your account on the web and select any of the plans. It works fine. I know many people who have done this on other phones that Cingular said required high dollar data plans for years with no problems or extra charges. I really liked the Blackjacks thin size. The only drawback for me was the lack of touch screen and the smartphone OS.

usually all of the "smart phones" need a extra data package to use all the capabilities .... you dont need the package to use the phone but then it just works like a regular phone ... i was looking at getting a treo (i have verizon) and it would have been another $40+ ontop of my already $80 per month to use it

IMO, Windows 5.0 sucks the big one. I would much rather have a Palm OS and I hate Palm!!!!

I had the Motorola Q. Basically the same thing as the Blackjack.

Very poor intergration and phone functions.

thats crap. Windows mobile 5 is a better OS than palm could ever be. If i were you get the 8525 or the 8125. both have the wifi capability and then add on the medianet unlimited for 20.00 a month. the internet will operate at dialup or wifi speeds and html web browsing. no palm rss feed crap. i have had my 8125 for almost a year and its great. it will load the freak or RR with no problems. the only thing it has trouble with is java apps like chatrooms.

The fact still remains that anything Windows mobile or Pocket PC sucks horribly. I've had many smartphones/pocket pcs over the years and they all blow. Its usually a horrible intergration between software and phone. I find that the software is at fault much more than the hardware of the phone is. I guess it all depends on what you expect from one of these devices. I guess I ask too much for a $600-800 mini phone computer.

Had 5.0 on the Q. Had to install 3 hacks and a couple of programs just to make it even close to a decent phone.

If what you are saying is true, than that just means that Palm sucks that much more.

If you get a chance, check out the blackberry perl. I'm not a fan of Tmobile but that phone is abslutly freaking sweet, I used a BlackJack/Q and was completely unimpressed, my free phone has more options.

Just fyi
