Jim,

I can only theorize Century wanted one upgrade head that would work on all the small helis, and there are probably many more Hawks out there than Ravens and Falcons. Again, these are just my guesses.

Well, except for the rotor head (waiting on the hawk flybar mount for the metal head block) i pretty much have everything built.

Also added a couple packages of those color caps heli-world sells. pics dont do it justice, they really make it look sharpe!

I just built my Raven this weekend. This is my first Raven and it's going into a scale project.

Besides the fact that my kit didn't ship with a flybar everything went together fairly well (hobby store is sending a flybar out). Not as simply as other kits but once I thought through the process I could usually figure out what the manual failed to describe.

My issue is hydro locking. This motor is used from another model (Hyper 50) and has never had a history of locking up. I'm not running a header tank at this point. My vent tube did not come pre-bent like QuantumPSI's and the manual just showes it bent up toward the tank top. I have a t-filter in line with the carb line and pinch the line to the carb when refueling. I am getting a ton of fuel into my pipe and motor when trying to start. I definitely don't like the start shaft system on this model. May have to upgrade to the al. fan and one-way.

Any suggestions on the hydro lock issue?

Thanks, Shayne

I think you need to modify your vent tube such that you don't get fuel into the pipe when you're fueling it up. Also, if you do see fuel going into the pipe, just pick up the model and drain it. Once it's drained, it should be ok. Just make sure the vent fuel line only has air in it, and no fuel. What don't you like about the start system?

The "dog bone" style just looks to flimsy to me. It also requires the use of a start shaft with a built in one-way. My other models don't require this. The start shaft also doesn't seem to readily pop out of the fan coupling after it's finished rotating. Mind you, I haven't had the engine running in it yet so maybe it will pop out easier when it's running.

I haven't had the model running yet so these may be first impression beefs.

As far as the fuel problem. I'll have to really have a closer inspection of the vent tube tonight.

Cheers, Shayne

Shayne,

If the start shaft does not pop up when you release it, you don't have the engine aligned properly. Try loosening the bolts on the sides of the frames that go into the motor mount, and while holding the start shaft into the slot in the fan, retighten the bolts.

Thanks SteveH. I'll give that a try.

Hope to get everything sorted out tonight. Maybe I'll get to test fly it this weekend and then put it away until the fuselage is ready.

Love the landing gear on this bird. Wide and beefy.

Shayne,, after you get your motor aligned you start your motor as followed,,

1) do not push down hard when starting,
2) after your motor starts release the starters button and allow about 1 or 2 seconds before you remove/lift the starter (this allows the starter's RPM to match the motors RPM),,

after you use this starter system a few times you may find you like it very much, it is a vary simple and trouble free system, and the clutch holds up great and is quite smooth,, you will find the T shaft to be rather strong, put a drop of TriFlow or oil on the T-shaft to get it to slide up/down in the bearings smoother..

you didn't say what fuse your putting your Raven in ??

Thanks for the tips Jim. I read those instructions in the manual too. Just haven't been able to get the motor running yet.

The Raven is going into an Approach Engineering Apache.

Oh WOW, I can't wait to see that. I only have 3 issues to solve with my Raven. I'm having some vibrational problems. When I go to idle up, the horizontal fin goes MAD. The next issue is a tail wag on the 6100T (unfortunately, I get the feeling that this is related to the vibration). And finally, my engine overspeeds like crazy and I just don't want to screw around with curves so I may just get a governor. I'm gonna check a few things tonight on the helicopter to try and locate the source of vibrations. Did some more flying today though, it's been a while. I find myself really nervous doing backwards circuits.

This helicopter is just like a precision machine, the inputs have to be dialed in just right for it to complete the maneuver. I don't find this to be the case with a raptor. I've found with a raptor, you get the inputs "close enough" and it'll fly through the maneuver pretty easily (just for a contrast).

LOL...I had the same idea DM. I'm going to hang on to the landing gear though and use them on another heli.

steve, are the updated raven's shipping with the carbon torque tube? the last raven I purchased in July had the stainless version, which I felt was a bit more robust...if this is the case, i'm going to order the ss tube with my kit.

Yes, all the Raven, Falcons, and Predators have been shipping with the SS tubes for quite a while.

What's the difference between the Raven and the Falcon? My box had Raven/Falcon on it if I remember correctly.

When I received my kits both came with the SS torque tubes. I have on the side, several carbon fiber TT just in case something goes wrong.

Falcon has the mCCPM control while the Raven has the eCCPM controls.
