Now i need to revive my donor LV X5 thats been sitting on the shelve.

I am siting here pondering or should i say day dreaming.
Just a throught.
Why we lock the gates when we are at the field?
Wouldn't it be nice to have some siting or benches at the field and allow walk in guest to see Rc helicopters. Like flyd Benn field.
What i mean is. Do we hide and fly or promote the hobby and SRW to the public? we could make a small door for walk in guest or leave door open when member is in there. have a sign walk in only.

Pro: Promote SRW and RC hobby.
Con: Safety.

just a throught...

Tony,
It would be great but then the benches may get destroyed eventually. FBF doesn't get this problem because there's usually a guard stationed at the front.

KEEP THE GATE LOCKED

Why we lock the gates when we are at the field?
Wouldn't it be nice to have some siting or benches at the field and allow walk in guest to see Rc helicopters
Security at our site is a big problem. Unlike Floyd Bennett field - which is guarded by the National park ranger and NYPD. We (NYC Parks) only have 3 Park security guards, that’s not enough for each borough let alone one for each park.

We are not stopping the public from entering the park, be it for biking, bird watching, hiking, soccer, watch Heli flying...etc. that’s what the other entrance is used for. But we will not allow vehicles to drive in. Walk-ins are less of a threat than a vehicle on the field.

We have the field from 8am to 8pm each day - but what happens after 8pm is beyond our control. Remember this is a public park. We can only secure the gate and try to keep vehicles from entering.

Within the last months we notice ATVs entering our field - you even filmed the circles with your Heli cam. This is with a locked gate - but they entered on the entrance opposite our gate. An open gate would invite more ATVs.. Needless to say we are already have a plan to close up that opening for vehicles off-loading their ATV.

Gate must remain lock at all times. We seem in the past when un-authorized vehicle would come in, dump garage, rip up the grass and basically trash / destroy the area over - night. This has happened recently as of Oct/2012.

Here another scenario.. You’re finishing flying for the day and there are other non-members cars inside. Do you want to be the person to tell them to move their cars??? Remember we (SRW) are not empowered to enforce Park rules - that NYPD and NYC Parks’ job.

It’s bad enough that we have our members zipping up / down the pit area, but can you imagine the general public going in/out. And forget about leaving your trunk / doors open and having all your stuff laying around without it walking away.

More people on the field = more of a safety concern. General public will not respect the flight area and just walk right into it. Are we going to station a member to watch for stray people though out the flight line or does that member want to fly? A fence like Floyd would be nice.

Having power on the field to re-charge/security camera is a great idea, - BUT all the wiring was putted out of the ground and sold for its copper! A Battery power camera is nice - but how do you send the signal out??? WiFi, hard wire, cellular ?

If you are interested in prompting the hobby – there are other means. FF, Kids Heli education, there is a thread on HeliFreak dot com under “new member introduction” dated Jan 18, 2013 “Indoor Buddy Boxes For Kids With Autism?” This person is located in the NYC area..Here’s an opportunity.

Bottom line KEEP THE GATE LOCKED.

Oh No. I dont mean leaving the gate open when we leave.
What i was thinking was to open it when members are in the field but i hear what your mean if stubborn ppl wont leave.
It is a beautiful area and it is a shame that it is tucked away. I guess that is better for us. Our little hidaway.
I know what you mean when ATV and other vehicle ripping up the grass and ppl using it as a landfield.
All i am saying is that I would not have found the field if the gate wasn't open and the signs on funfly.

We do promote this hobby. We host Fun Flys and gave out fliers at the local hobby shops and post on a few forums. Signs were posted during the fun flys and gate left open for the public and those that are traveling from far and close that are coming to fly with us.

We have a few members that found us thru the AMA and local hobby shops. So we are not hiding from the public. If they are really interested they will find us.

The local walk in are not interested in our hobby but want to help themselves to their own sport of Atv or just hang out and trash other people's area.

You should thank a few of our members who always help out to secure the gate when that gate was compromise. Security is one of the top priority to keep our field the way it is.

U chaps are getting ahead of yourselves. U cannot attach or affix any structure to any city park. The field is fine the way it is. Leave no trace. Many newer members do not know of the tumultuous times this club has experienced from its inception @ 80 th n Seaview. If anyone wants to know about it ask the senior members. Happy Hovering.
