The real reason to bear arms is not for the personal protection against criminals, however that is a great benefit... It's there for the general populace to not be defenseless against a tyrannical government.

Carry on.

The topic of gun culture never turns out to be a light discussion. People are passionate about it. Like abortion & religion.

I own guns first because I like to target shoot. 22s are my favorite.

I also have a .45 for home defense, right next to a nice Streamlight LED flashlight. (that's important guys, make sure you keep a light with your home defense gun.)

I've wanted a 9 mm Glock ever since they came out in the 80s. (I was too young then) Now I've got one. (Model 34, for those interested) It's an engineering masterpiece. Not a bad shooter, but it can't touch my .22s.

You English are brainwashed more than I thought. Yes, the crooks can always get guns, no matter how hard the government tries to prevent it. The sensible answer is that every citizen should have the right to own & carry guns as well. This way, when a crook is wandering the street with his piece, and he decides to do something stupid, he will be wiped out quickly by the citizens.

We gun owners have a saying in the US: "Police are there to examine the crime scene." In other words, by the time they get there, it's too late. Whatever was going to happen would have happened. Another quote for you: "An armed society is a polite society." -Wyatt Earp. (a famous American cowboy)

If someone broke into my home, I'd be up in flash, with my .45 and a flashlight, ready to throw some lead. Sadly, in Illinois, we can't carry. There are some neighborhoods I'd feel a lot safer carrying in.

Does anyone have a link to the article about the town in Florida where the mayor required everyone to own a gun? The violent crime rate dropped rapidly. All of a sudden, being a crook became much too risky of an occupation.

Hunting is great too. Wild game meat is not contaminated with growth hormones or other nasty stuff. Is the best, most pure meat you can get. I've only been able to do squirrel hunting with a .22 myself.

There are lots of good reasons to own guns. Defense, target shooting, hunting... The key is good upbringing. You have to be brought up to respect them and be comfortable with them. You have to be taught with an iron fist how to handle them. You have to have responsible enough parents so that you are not influenced by today's video games into thinking that shooting people is acceptable.

In Switzerland during WWII, every male citizen between certain ages was required to be in the militia and to own a gun and keep ammo handy. The national sport in Switzerland is target shooting. In Switzerland, they have very strict social control. Even small children respect guns, and would not think of shooting at a person unless it were a case of life & death. Ever notice that Switzerland wasn't bothered by Hitler too much in WW2? It was not worth the risk. A mountainous country, where every citizen was potentially armed... He could bomb them and roll tanks over them, but he could never secure the country, because his people would always be wary about getting shot in the back.

The general citizenship being able to carry guns is the one thing that makes a free country. That's why many of us Americans are so passionate about it. As long as the general citizenship can have guns, it can overthrow an oppressive government, if need be. Once the government disarms its citizens, the general population no longer really has any say.

Let's learn from history. The first thing Hitler did when he took over was to disarm the general population. This way, he could send armed troops in to do whatever he wanted with them.

I'm sorry, I know you didn't mean to touch off such a tinderbox. But guns are very important. The general population feels much too safe, and it will regret it if we are ever disarmed. We will be like the poor British, who don't have the power to defend themselves.

How could this thread possibly go on this long without some of my favorite Simpsons Quotes:
.............
Krusty: Guns aren't toys! They're for family protection, hunting dangerous or delicious animals, and keeping the King of England out of your face!!!

.............
Homer: But this gun had a hold on me. I felt this incredible surge of power, like God must feel when he's holding a gun.

.............
Gun Shop Owner: Well, you'll probably want the accessory kit. Holster...
Homer: Oh, yeah.
Gun Shop Owner: Bandoleer.
Homer: Baby.
Gun Shop Owner: Silencer.
Homer: Mmm-hmm.
Gun Shop Owner: Loudener.
Homer: [drooling noise]
Gun Shop Owner: Speed-cocker.
Homer: Ooh, I like the sound of that.
Gun Shop Owner: And this is for shooting down police helicopters.
Homer: Oh, I don't need anything like that...yet. Just give me my gun!
Gun Shop Owner (begins wrestling with Homer for the gun): Sorry pal. The law requires a five day waiting period. We've got to do a background check.
Homer: Five days?! But I'm mad now! (gun shop owner pulls Homer's gun out of his hands) I'd kill you if I had my gun!
Gun Shop Owner (calm): Yeah, well, ya don't.

..... end of quotes ........

Now in all seriousness, should the situation arise, the responsibility for the well being and safety of my family is mine. It is not the responsibility of law enforcement officials to teleport to the scene and rescue me or my family. Even if they could do so I would still insist that the job is mine. It is a job I accepted when I took on the responsibility of having a family. And as I have always been taught - always use the right tool for the right job. If that means the use of lethal force then so be it.

If you believe that the responsibility for the safety and well being of your family is NOT your job and you wish to depend on the speedy arrival of law enforcement officials to rescue you should the situation arise then I wish you the best of luck.

"OK, Random shootings in American Streets seem to be common place.

right or wrong??"

Wrong! it is very unusual. That is like me saying "OK, Random bombings in English Streets seem to be common place."

right or wrong??

I am a proponent of carrying guns however unfortunately the Federal Government and some States has limited us to the type of guns we could legally carry... most do not allow us to carry rapid fire weapons ie M-16 or assault guns AK-47.

the worse thing about the uk is, if a burglar broke into our houses there ant much we can do, if we hit him were the ones that get arrested, there was a guy in the uk sometime ago and he had £1 mill worth of motorbikes in a barn and he set shotguns up to protect hes living and someone brokein one day and got killed, now yes he did go to prison for abit but was let out soon after and again it happened again when another farmer tried to protect hes home from burglars and shot one, it went to court for weeks and he sat in a cell till he was let free for only protecting him self,

so what im saying is, if someone broke in my house and i attacked him and punched him to the ground and held him till the police came and he told them i attacked him, i would also be arrested, now thats how the uk is messed up, never mind having guns

i have an air rifle but i would not have the guts to point it not even use it against someone that tries to brakein to my home, its hard to know what to do apart from try not letting them get he chance to brake in by making my homes safe,

recently in my area two similar things happened...

A local mn shot and killed a burgular stealing his ATV...and was charged with manslaughter.

A nearby known crack house that police would not do anything about ws burnt to the ground by locl residents and five of those residents were convicted of arson and are waiting sentence...it looks like the sentences will be very light however.

People rely on police to keep the peace and when the police fail we are not allowed to even defend our own things...this will eventually have to change.

.

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.... Dennis

"A local mn shot and killed a burgular stealing his ATV...and was charged with manslaughter."

I know a lot of people don't see a problem with this, but I have issues with it.

I've been a "gun nut" for over 10 years. Carry a .40S&W Glock. Now, the last thing I want to do is shoot somebody, anybody. I have decided that if given the choice of stopping someone with a hollowpoint, or letting them take my stereo/car/ATV etc, they can have it. Not worth going to court or taking another life over. HOWEVER, if they then turn their aggression on me or my family, it's go time!
