The dell outlet has some great deals early in the morning. Logon around 6 to 7 am central time. Insperons for 300 to 600 depending on the model.

go to an apple store and try out a macbook. you will be supprised how much more user friendly they are than windows comps and the macbook is an incredibly well made and fast machine. not to mention macs come with an incredible software suite for media/editing/comp enjoyment...

you can bring over all of your windows files too and apple has TOP customer service. when i had my dell, service was horrid.

last january i baught myself an Acer Aspire 3615 model for college.
it works absolutly great!
i have never heard of any complaints about Acer's, i have only heard good things about it, and i can back that up! it still works like as if it just came out of the box.
i did however buy a new battery. just for higher capacity more then doubling the running time, great for those long 2-3 hour classes at school. the stock battery was a 14.4 volt li-ion with 200mah, my new one that i got for $55, has 4400mah. so with the new battery i can get almost 4.5 hours when conserving power, 3h if i'm not.
very high quality, very VERY quiet, even in a silent room its still difficult to pick up any noise from it, only the fan turns on occasionally when its needed.

i highly reccomend the Acer line of laptops. they are also the best priced from what i can tell.

Not really into R/C anymore but I check this site out from time to time (HGT!).

Anyway, I saw the last reply and had to add a comment.

I bought an ACER for my wife and it seems to me that the buttons are quite loud! Not just the keyboard, but the mouse control pad and the scroll button. The computer itself is very quiet, just the buttons are noisey.

I use a Gateway myself and it is as near to silent as can be. I take it to work with me often to work on my side job projects and my co-workers never complain of noise. As a matter of fact, they often ask if I am going to turn it on!

Plus you get the added bonus of Gateway NORMALLY using AMD chips!

I think I paid around ~$480 for mine and ~$550 for my wife's ACER FWIW.

i dunno...about the keyboard noise....mine is pretty quiet atleast....maybe some models use a different type of keyboard or something.
i paid $1200 cdn before taxes back in january, now, you can get one with the same specs or better for half that.

I have a Dell Inspiron that I use for college. I haven't had any problems with it. It works extremely well and I enjoy it.

That being said, a couple of my friends have Macs. Awesome laptops. It takes a little bit of time to get used to a Mac but it's not rocket science. After a day or so of playing around with it, it will become familiar. Now that programs like Word can be used with Macs, I recommend it. If I had to choose again, I would go that route.
