I currently have my tail rotor blades turning TOWARDS the main body of the heli and not AWAY from the main body as appears in the setup manuals etc. Is there any difference having it turning towards the main body? Everything flies quite well, but perhaps it may not hold as well? Anyone know the effect that this setup would have on handling?

The tail rotor blades should turn up into the main rotor wash. You have the belt twisted the wrong direction.

CCW

when you start banging it around,
your tail will not have the authority
a ccw tail would.
the blades will have more volocity (airspeed)
going up through the downwash than down through it.
check your gyro setting and rudder as you reverse
the rotation!

must fly or die

You'll want to get it turning the other direction (counter-clockwise). The difference in tail authority will be obvious as soon as you try to do anything beyond hover and basic flight.

I have changed the direction of the rotation (and switched the blades around)... now the heli is spinning in a circle...

I have tested the direction of the gyro and it seems to be pulling in the right ditection, that is, when heli is turned clockwise, the slider goes towards the tail box (opposite direction that the heli is turning).

Is there perhaps a radio setting I need to change too so it doesn't spin - to counteract the tail spinning in the opposite direction?

belt change?

Did you turn the belt the other way so the blades actually TURN the other way or did you just flip the blades themselves? Check the manual for the proper twist in the belt, it's 90degrees ccw if looking up the heli from the tail (if I recall correctly, thus check the manual.).

For you 3d guys, I've kinda got to wondering whether the airspeed thing really counts as a reason for this. I mean, if you're inverted roughly half the time, or at least pulling negative pitch, your tail rotation would then be the wrong way for the bonus airspeed. Since in casual flight there's plenty of tail authority either way it seems like it might be a tossup as to which way really is better in theory. In practice I'd go with it setup "correctly" simply because that's how it was engineered.

Yes turned the whole blade grips and hub around (not the actual blades themselves).

Seems like the gyro is not holding now!

change gyro and servo back...

He would not need to change the servo movement or gyro direction if he reverses the tail rotor rotation direction. The pitch angle of the TR blades is the same either way. Change the gyro/servo back to how you had it.

I would think that if you are doing aerobatics/3D, then inverted flight/pitch on the main rotor is just as important as upright. The tail authority inverted would suffer on a normal direction if the rotor wash truly affects the tail rotor authority.
