Dana,

The washers are good idea. I think I'll do that along with the Silicone. I didn't get exact one you've posted. I picked the copper one labeled 'Ultra Copper' High Temp RTV Silicone.

http://www.amazon.com/Permatex-COPP...t/dp/B0002KL67O

It had a higher temp rating (although it's an overkill at 700 F)

Quick question: If the washer solution works out, is there a need to use the this to form a gasket? Is there an advantage vs. the Zenoah gaskets?

hi Andrew
i have been thinking , and this is right off the top of my head , so i could be all wet , but i am wondering , the zenoah gaskets are for the zenoah muffler , which is super light , and could be too soft when used with a V2 as it is quite a bit heavier , and i am wondering if this could be some of the problem

i only have run silicone , without a gasket , i have been trying to find the post i read about skipping the gasket , but so far no luck , dana

No trouble Dana,

I think with the silicone gasket with the metal piece + the washers, I'll be in good shape. I'll just have to find some acceptable washers that will fit inside the muffler nicely. Shouldn't be that difficult to do.

Thanks for your suggestions. Definitely a big help, and eliminating another gotacha for future

Dana, Raja,

Please advise. I was priming the bulb (my carburetor is cotinuing to send send air bubbles down the line. No matter how slowly I squeeze the bulb, or how long I hold down the bulb... I think this may also be contributing my engine hick-up (throttle bogging down on it's own at above 50% throttle)

When I was doing this today, I've noticed that my heli table is wet with gas. At first I thought I may have spilled some gas, but that wasn't the case. While I am priming the bulb, it's leaking gasoline at the V2 muffler.

Would the permatex solve this? I was also told that for automotive applications, the permatex stuff works well, but for heli app, the stuff either melts and becomes a big greasy goo, or even just disappears.

I don't think making a copper gasket is an option, as I don't have a lathe. All I have is a dremmel, and frankly I don't feel comfortable doing this. Is there replacement gasket I can buy that is better in durability and quality than the Zenoah Stock parts? I have a Z-RC gasket (spare), which I cut easily cut away or modify to make this fit. would this be ok to use, or would it simply melt?

This is frustrating. I didn't know priming the bulb could flood the engine. May be my carb is faulty.

Huh?
Priming cannot flood the engine. It only floods the carburator internals and returns the excess fuel once flooded back to the tank. You can push the bulb until the cows come home and no fuel will ever drip out of the muffer. That doesn't make sense.

What you see out of the muffler is coming out while the engine is running - you don't have a good seal on it. Try to make a gasket out of copper as I recommended before using a dremel tool and you will be in good shape.

How do you make a gasket out of a copper? Don't you have to cut out the correct sized holes and what not? I don't have a machine shop here, nor a simple lathe. All I can think of is using something like dremel to cut the holes out to make this.

If you look at my last post this is exactly what I was saying.

Confused? Same here. When I am priming the bulb, I can see a small amount of gasoline leaking out of the exhaust port. Right between the engine and the muffler.

Gasket
Use the regular gasket as a template.
Cut a rectangle out of copper sheet with the dremel tool cutoff wheel.
Cut a small rectangle centered in this rectangle for the exhaust gases. Use a file to clean up the cut after doing it with the dremel tool. You have to be careful and take your time.
Drill two holes for the bolts, first under size them and then adjust the position as you enlarge the size to match the bolts so they are perfectly centered.

You can leave the outside square or round it off like the original.

Expect to spend a good 30 minutes to do this and make a good one. Nothing is a 5 minute job in this hobby -- don't believe anyone that says "I can do this in 5 minutes".

P.S. You got something else going on there with your engine with the fuel leaking from the muffler. Maybe, just maybe, its worth your while to drive 3 hours and meet me in Chapel Hill. You could learn alot from this "old timer".

How thick does this copper need to be? Where's the best place to get this?

I am wondering if my throttle resetting problem is due to muffler not making a full contact.

I'm back!
Finally managed flights 199, 200, and 201 in Franklinton, NC at the RAMRC club there! NC gets the honors for the 200th flight. Prior that that the 100th was at Topsham, ME in the BAM club field.

I didn't just drive down there to make that flight, actually took my Spectra along the ride to have something to fly for fun while on the business trip. The last month I was working pretty hard with my collegue trying to get a new autonomous heli built and ready to go to deliver to our customers down there. Its a pretty neat setup, as you can take off, fly waypoints, return and land, and do a whole lot of other things using a laptop and nintendo type joystick to control the heli (no experienced operator necessary). They wanted to try a mission where you have a data collection box that you take off with, fly to a waypoint and drop it with a parachute at your desired location. Then you leave (return to base) and let it collect data. Later you takeoff again, fly to that waypoint and once that unit on the ground is within range with a unit on the helicopter it transmitts all its data up to the helicopter. You hover overhead for a few seconds, data uploads, and then you fly back home autonomously and land. Once back at your base, you can download the data from the helicopter to the laptop and analyze the data. They wanted to try this mission during our delivery and handoff, and we set it all up ran it and it worked like a champ. Pretty cool stuff!

Anyway, I'm finally back after a 1500+ mile road trip and its good to be home again. Spectra finally cleared the 200 flight marker and only time will tell where the next 100 flight marker flight will be logged!
