3x FP 4900
2x Astro 109
2x V balance

If you have a 40A, 12V source at your field available (as we do), you can take off at every 20 min with these

The TP-1010C says it needs 11-15v dc @25amps. I have a 20 amp power supply here at the house ... and it's not enough. I can't charge at 1C (5A) without the charger having an input power failure. The generator if it has a 12vdc output is going to have to be more than 10amps.

rjmdubois, You're lucky to have that power at your field.

I suspect it's your power supply. What are you using for a power supply? 20A should be more than enough to charge a 6S pack at 5A.

If you're using a converted PC power supply that's most likely the problem. Most PC Power supplies really aren't up to the task of delivering their rated current.

ch53e, we have a large truck lead battery (I guess 170 Ah), and a 10A car batery charger, that is always on. Very effective and cheap.

We don't have any electrical power at our field. This isn't a converted pc supply .. but it is an old power supply. It says, regulated 13.8 vdc at 20 amps. I'm going to borrow an amp meter from a friend and truly see what it puts out and what my charger is drawing. I flew 5 times today with 2 packs .. charged 3 times at the field using my truck while it idled. I'm still going to pick up a few more batteries and a generator for the field.

power supply

and older power supply?? theres your problem, i bought a 20amp power supply at hobbypeople and it does wonders, i had an older power supply, like you ch57 and it couldnt handle the amps,it would make my tt1010 charger die. you need continous amps.
i had an older china power supply with a rating of 5 continous but when i tried to charge at 3amps it wouldnt work, the rating on the china power supply was a lie!!

Just because it's old doesn't mean it's the problem. There are lots of old hight quality (e.g., Astron) power supplies still in use today. A good quality power supply will last quite a long time. I have a 16 year old Astron that's still going strong. Many of these supplies are in use 24x7.

It's the quality that counts, not the age.

Yeah it's gotta be the power supply. I use one of those Astro 10amp power supply's and it works just fine with the 1010C at 4.9amp.

so you are telling me you can't charge this thing from the field off of a battery? I really want one of these, but this is getting ridiculous. I will not be bringing a generator to the field. I can charge off my wifes car I suppose, but she isn't going to want me bringing the hybrid to the field all the time.

Can't you just charge off of one of those jumpstarter packs? If it goes dead, you can just charge it up off of the car.

Most jum start packs have a relatively low capacity and will not charge many packs before the output voltage of the pack drops enough so that the charger shuts down. I use an 85Ahr deep cycle battery, sold as a liesure battery in the UK, this will charge quite a few packs before the voltage drops too low.

FWIW,

I just bought a car battery with a large capacity and cold cranking amps. I just charge that battery every now and then. I charge my batteries at the field using my 1010c/210 combo and my Astroflite 109/210 combo. Both seem fine. Even if I am able to get 3-4 charges per the car battery (which I get more...I haven't yet counted how many though), I can always come home and use my car battery charger to charge it overnight. I like it better than a generator because it is a lot cleaner and quieter.

PS - Happy new year!

Thanks to a good buddy we are now set for e-heli's at our field. We do not have power there so it used to be charge before you come and get a couple more of your car battery. He purchased a small inverter type yamaha generator. It sits in the back of his truck, we run an extension cord and plug into it. I think it is a 2000 watt generator so we have plenty of power. And man is it quiet. With it about 20 feet away you can barely hear it. On the scale of the honda's. I think it cost about 450 or so but the enjoyment out of it has been well worth it. Plus 3-4 of us use it at the same time charging and we have not had any problems. We bring out power supplies and hook into the extension and we are good to go. And it last all day on a small tank of gas. Perfect setup for the e-heli crowd at our field.
