Hi,
Does anyone know a good source for 9T and 10T motor pinions fitting the Align 430L with 3.17mm shaft?

Background:
(my goal is 10+ minutes flight time with comfortable 3D power but perhaps not top notch power. I want to include tic-tocs and most piro manouvers. Usually I don't need a lot of power margin on 50-size helis. So I am assuming a 4cell setup with trex450SE will bring down the current needed to keep RPM above 2500. But then I will probably need less teeth than the standard 11T).

Judging from above, does it sound crazy to put in a 2500mAh 4S1P battery?(weighing some 250 grams, a BEC will add weight but I am staying with the quite light 430L motor:-)

Regards, Gunnar

Align do a 10 tooth I think. 12 tooth is the odd one out with Align pinions.
Not sure on a 9 tooth, prob wont fly to well at that low a HS.

Also you will have a dog of a heli if you go over a 190 gram battery, defeats the purpose of going 4s, as you'll just be using the extra power to pull the extra weight.
If you want to do tic-tocs you need around 2800rpm+
You wont get any 10 minute flights when you get into 3d power either.
What you see the top guys doing on video gives them about a 6 minute flight with a 2100 battery.
If you go 4s stay at 1800mah, power plus not too much weight.
The new gen 3s batteries from Flightpower and TP have a discharge of 20c+ so you can bang them pretty hard these days.
I dont see to many posts of anyone using 4s anymore, so perhaps with the latest motors like the Medusa 3400 and 3s, you will be able to do any 3d you like.
I guess my point is that 3d and duration dont belong in the same sentence with E power...

Thanks Gorn,
Just lets see if someone finds the 9T for me...

Agree with your statement. I will probably have to paint it pink and the heali will scream "oink oink" by the load

Still I've got stuck on this idea, the power is spent on turning the high RPM, not weight. I compare with earlier e-heli experience (current stays the same with same RPM even though I lighten the heli, Eco8, with 20%).

The good reasons to stay with 3S are: Money and availability of stuff needed!!! I can buy three 3S batteries at the cost of one mammuth 4S I am looking at. What is then duration?!
So my conclusion: Flight duration goes in hand with money spent.
And, beyond 10 minutes just maybe someone will bring a shotgun to reduce my flight times

I'm pretty sure Align's 3.2mm pinions only go down to 11T, probably because they're made out of brass. Align makes a 9T, but it's for smaller diameter motor shafts. I wanted a 3.2mm 10T for an Aon-3500kv because the main gear on my MX400 is smaller than the TRex main gear. The Ikarus Eco-8 10T is steel and worked very well. Once I got past the learning stage, I wanted a little higher headspeed, so I changed it out to an Align 11T brass pinion. If you check the Ikarus website, they have 3.2mm steel pinions in 10T, 11T, 12T, 13T, 14T, 15T, 16T, and 17T sizes. I don't think there is enough material left to make a 9T with the large 3.2mm diam motor shaft.

I've looked for a 9 tooth for my Nue 1107 y2 with S4
packs to keep the HS down and haven't had any luck

I've only found a 10 tooth for the 3.2mm shaft which
will make the HS 3000-3100 from what I've read on S4's

Thanks bbeverlie and BikeNBoatN,

I was about to check on the fit of Ikarus pinions to the Align gear. Good to know it might work but available only down to 10T.

For starters it means I am going with a 3S configuration with a well known and proven motor/gear/controller combination. With todays high C discharge batteries it might not be a bad thing.

My one and only test of a Trex450SE (3S) was terrific! The very locked in feeling must have been contributed to by the 6V driven Jr281's.

My yearning for a good winter training heli which actually spends its time flying is HUGE I guess that cools a bit of my experimental drive and will save me some money as well

Funny, I felt this to be the only subject for the Trex which was least well documented on the web.

So, thanks again! Over and out on this thread. I would welcome anyone who want to keep in touch about 4S setups.

Regards, Gunnar
