Just venting my frustrations here. The clutches on raptors I've decided are not good enough! My 50 was making a rasping kind of sound when I started it up. Had a few flights after rebuilding from a crash and decided to take a look. Just a few small things - the pinion had sheered in two and the starter shaft was just grinding on metal becuase the bearing in the clutch bell had siezed This is the second major problem I've had with clutches on the Raptor and it is definately the weakest point on what is generally a good heli.

Now let me compare it to my sceadu 30 which is still going strong after three years of hard use. It flies so much better than the Raptor because it's more balanced - no battery pack right up front to get it nose heavy and it's better designed. Problem is it is very flimsy when it crashes and I've just had a tail servo let go because it's mounted on the boom and the oil from the exhasut killed it. Not sure what to do. I was thinking of selling the sceadu to have two raptors but now I'm not so sure. The sceadu has NEVER let me down and it's the only only that's kept me flying. The thing just keeps going and going and going without anything wearing out. Any thoughts people??

I wish that were true!! In my case if something goes wrong it usually is me but this has got to be a major flaw in the design. I'm surprised Thunder Tiger haven't addressed the problem. I have found others that have had similar experiences. Maybe I jinxed it by calling it the Craptor!!

I've had 2 raptor 50s and my friends have 3 more. 5 50's in all and not 1 clutch problem. maybe its your setup/build

I agree with ben though, I'm going all electric, E620SE on the way

I'd say it's something with the setup/build. I've flown the heck out of a Raptor 50 for some time now and have never had a clutch issue. Neither has anyone else at my field.

Agree with the above - went through 16 gallons on the same clutch with my first Rappy 50, never skipped a beat.

I have to admit I've thrashed the hell out of the ol' dear but I've given the same treatment to the sceadu. I just wonder if the governer shortens the life of the clutch when it kicks in. OS Hyper and 30% puts out some power at 1900rpm. How long should a clutch last before pinion starts to wear?

You'll probably get more replies in the nitro Raptor forum.

Maybe it’s an electric clutch – LOL.

That’s one headache that I’m not going to miss after going to EP.

That and ...
storing cases of fuel
the oily mess after flying
burned out glow plugs
flooded engines
dead glow igniters
dead starter batteries
flame outs
engine tuning
etc
etc
etc

The price of nitro goes up each year and the price of batteries goes down.

Also the performance of electric’s has really blown by the nitro helicopters this your. This is really an historic year for high performance electric helicopters.

Raptor 30 clutch
I read some bad things about the v1 clutch before I bought mine but I needed a good heli to learn on. Raptor clutches have too much play between the clutch and liner so the centrifigal force slings the arms so far out that they break. My First clutch-62 flights failed(Broke). 2nd clutch 28 flights failed (broke) Converted to v2...60 flights (Bearing failed). I love my Raptor. I just wanted to vent.. The pro I fly with suggested gluing in an aluminum strip under the liner or gluing in 2 liners and turning them down on a lathe to a tolerance of a couple thousands. ( I know, I dont have a lathe either)

Im sorry Professor, I dont understand your reply "all of 4 minutes". Bear with me cause Im fairly new but the tighter the clutch the better. If you can start and launch, the liner will wear in. And if the tolerance is too great , then the arms on the clutch flex out too far and they fatigue and break. What does 4 minutes mean?

garaptor,
Not saying that I necessarily agree with him but I believe that what he means is the the elec's batteries will last about 4 minuntes of flying before they start to go flat...
