Successful Maiden

Tracking was off about 2mm... initial trim was dead on, and I had to drop my gyro gain from 75% down to about 70%.

I'm currently working with 30% expo but I plan to zero it out as the day progresses. Guys, this helicopter is a dream.

Simply amazing. I'll be plugging the Eagletree in after I figure out how to adjust the tracking (I think I need to adjust both of the linkages going into the blade holder).

The 3500Kv motor performed exceptionally well with the 13T pinion. I'll be sure to tach it next flight.

I'll get some flight photos too. I couldn't ask for better weather today.

Second Flight

Tracking squared away... just needed a twist on one side.

Tached HS with the 3500kV motor and a 13T pinion is 3000 RPM This motor is extremely effecient. As suggested by Scott, I see a 12T pinion in my future.

Flight (Hover basically) time was about 6-7 minutes... sorry forgot the stopwatch using Apex 3S 2100 MkIIIs.

Next flight will be with the Eagletree and an FP EVO20 1800 3S. I'm going to drop my expo down to 15% too. She hovers hands free!

So long as the heli gawds permit, I'll have the son get a few glamour shots while airborne.

3rd Flight

Got some EagleTree data this time around. I really should swap out the pinion. I'll be putting the 12T in it this evening.

My FP EVO20 pack dropped down to 8V! Hopefully I didn't damage it. I flashed my EagleTree firmware right before the flight so I may have a voltage variance.

Here's my recorded data (I didn't bother with the temperature probe -- everything is running nice and cool)

Flight consisted of mainly of hovering with a little bit of collective pumping, some piros, and FF.

Flight Photos

Pretty much chronological. My compliments to my son on the photos. He's getting pretty good with this camera

That's it for today. It's the wife's birthday and I promised her the rest of the day is hers. Tomorrow can't come quick enough!

B\TCHEN!
Quit making me want new heli's.
I dig everything about this one but the canopy for some reason. Maybe it'll look a little meaner with some paint?

I'm going to order a second canopy and ship the better of the two off to jontherooster. I have no idea how I want it to look color scheme wise though.

At this rate I'll go inverted this time next year... took me almost a year and a half just to do a loop... and I've been flying planks for 20+ years.

Dragonus

I have tested the Dragonus a few months back. The observations are:

1)Flys nice but not quite as powerful cyclic as the Trex450, even with the 3D geometry.(A2-B2-C2 and A2-B1-C2)

2)The Head dampeners do not hold up, especially the clear plasitic washer in the head. They lasted 15 flight max.

3)The metal head is made of a very soft aluminum that sort of turns to powder or bends in a crash.

4)The heli is very light.

5)The heli comes with nice blades.

6)The heli is very smooth.

7)The metal balls for the links are made of aluminum and wear very, very quickly, unless they have since changed.

8)Belt drive is very robust and smooth.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be sure to keep my eyes on the head, both the dampening and any ill-effects if I happen to crash.

If it was a few months back, it is not the current Dragonus II. Did you get it in Asia or in the States and which model was it?

Many people are upgrading their Align heads to the Dragonus II head so that is some strange feedback.

Scott

I ended up going with an 11T pinion tonight. I couldn't find a 12T one.... looks like my HS should be right about the same as my T-Rex with its Himax 2815-3000 running a 13T (2400RPM). I plan to devote a full day of flying my Dragonus tomorrow and hope to put it through all its paces (at least those within my abilities).

I decided for the time being to stick with the A1-B2-C2 mixer settings. I didn't get enough flight time today to form an educated opinion on the machine's behavior with this config. Although, I'm very happy with it's feel thus far. I'm having a hard time judging by others comments what the real impact is in changing the mixing settings which means it's something else I'll need to get to.

In regards to the differences in the balls reported above... there's a thread a few posts down that has a snapshot of an Align ball, a Dragonus ball, and a Quick ball. The author ranked the Dragonus ball above that of the Align one so I can't help but wonder.

As far as weight goes, my AUW with a FP EVO20 1800 3S pack is 721g. That's a whole 140 grams lighter than my fully blinged T-Rex HDE.

I remember when installing the dampeners that they were the exact same ones as used on the T-Rex with the added clear pvc piece in between them. I'm not sure how that equates to them being worse than my T-Rex ones. If I notice the head loosening up over the course of my first 15 flights, I think I'll put my Red ReadyHeli ones in as I believe they'll be a drop in replacement but I seriously doubt my head is going to loosen up after a mere 15 flights considering my flying style.

I did adjust my pitch range a bit tonight. Its currently dialed in it at +9 degrees full positive and -7 degrees full negative.

I completely agree with Leon's comments regarding the tail drive and blades (unless he's referring to the wooden ones which I still have in their packaging). I've got some V2Blades on stand-by but I really don't see a need for them at this point. As I get more familiar with the helicopter I'll cycle them in and will be able to give an educated comparison between them and the MaxPro ones. I love my VBlades on my Rex... and I'm confident they'll perform similar on this machine.

I often fly with ******** and am hoping to get it in his hands soon too. I'll be sure to bring my HD CAMcorder with me as ****** is arguably one of the best pilots out there. Hopefully he'll be able to provide some open feedback... I'm not sure if his arrangement with ******** will allow me to fully capture his impressions but we'll see.

11T Pinion - Apex MK3 2100 3S Results

Headspeed tached at 2,700 RPM with the 11T pinion. I really like this combination.

Was able to work the cyclic quite a bit more this time around. I find it to be very responsive, even with the A1-B2-C2 mixing config. I'm not a 3Der but I see no reason why this thing couldn't be thrown around just as well as a T-Rex.

Flight duration was a little under 8 minutes. A bit FF, a little FFF, mad piros, collective pumping... basic non 3D beater manuveurs.

I too have just built the elite/pro version and I am impressed. I have HS65s and a GY401/F9650 on the tail and a CC35 ESC with a Z Power 450 motor. My first electric heli and so far so good - flies very well - hopefully the weather will allow some upside down work!!

I agree that the canopy is a little flimsy, I am thinking of putting the SA version on, which is plastice and may hold up better?

FYI:
All new Elite kits coming from the factory will have the plastic canopy (same as the SA Intruder). Only the Pro kits will come with the FG canopy. However, one can always get the FG canopy as a spare part later.

The Elite kits will also start shipping with FG main blades and not wood blades once inventory levels are refreshed. Please check with your supplier and ask them which configuration you will get during this transitional period.

FYI #2:
We are providing all three sets of main blades (wood, FG, CF) with our current stock of Elite kits. These kits will be disptached with the wood and CF blades and the FG baldes will follow in about 7-10 days at no charge to the customer.

Regards,
Scott

Hi all
after some looking around I have decided I will buy the dragonus kit.
Working on a budget, but thinking of the elite with align motor and esc, HS56 x3, 401 and 9650 for the tail.
Buying dn lipo balance charger from member (if still available).
For TX Rx thinking of a DX6 or 7 (want to go with 6 unless someone can convince me to use the 7)
And that should be it.
Since I'm absolutely new to the hobby (except for hovering my blade cp at home) I would appreciate any inputs regarding this setup.
Also, PM me if you have any good leads as where to buy.
I have a few retailers in mind, but there might always be a better place.
thanks in advance
KK
