Is anyone using a Walbro 257 carb?

The boat racers love em and Dave's motors suggest they hold their tune much better than the 64x series.

I have one here to try over the weekend (i'm convinced my 643 is faulty and couldn't find a replacement 643 in time for the weekend)

I'm wondering what needle settings to start at. Looking at what the boat guys set, it appears i'll need to start at about 2.5 turns out on the low and 1.5 on the high.

The carb has no primer bulb or choke. Can anyone suggest a good method to prime the carb without cranking for 20 pulls. I have the MA air filter so can't use my thumb as a choke.(weather is warm here, never needed the choke with the 643).

I thought perhaps i could put the throttle butterfly all the way closed and crank for a few pulls, or i may put the original zenoah air filter with choke back on.

I am running an older kg-22 engine and it doesn't have the primer bulb. If you run the carb dry then you will have problems getting it started. If you stop before the end of the tank and don't go several weeks between flights then there is no problem restarting. I did try using the trim to close the butterfly completely. This did help priming but it still took several cranks to get it started. Only other method would be to do the thumb over the carb, which I have done but it's a pain removing the filter.

Just cycle the engine.

If you have a make sure the kill switch is in the off position & with full collective providing you have a top start just cycle the motor of 4-5 seconds....This should get some fuel in the the cyclinder ...Switch on collective down & trim in idle position & give is start with the starter....It should fire up directly...

This is also the proper way to start up a nitro engine as well...

I hope this helps...Irwin
