Work got me for the past week or so. I have been in CT with the 76 I work on for the 12 month inspection. I did get the chance to sneek home for the weekend to see Girlfriend. I started working on the YAPS head assembly this weekend. It's rough but works really smooth. It still requires 3 more peices that I will have to make. It's all back together for the next flights with the tail, cockpit, and dummy NVPS. The YAPS head probe will not be installed.

This is what the YAPS head will look like when complete

When I worked on Comanche, there was a book with 83 pages filled with acronyms just for this program. Point. In aviation and APU, as we all know, stands for Auxiliary Power Unit. Comanche had a SPU, Subsystem Power Unit. MGB was for the Main Gear Box, TGB, Tail gear box etc. On this heli it was MDM, Main Dynamic Module and TDM Tail Dynamic Module. Well I guess they felt they needed to change a few. We all know what NVG or NVS stands for. Night Vision Goggles and Night Vision System. Well I guess they needed Pilotage making NVPS. YAPS is and insturment that measures Yaw side slip, angle of attack, baro pressure, Air speed, temp and anything else insturmentation techs can cram it there. YAPS just made it simple.

Hey Vetrider, you can chim in any time on the orange stuff. Or is it still a seceret. HeHe.

Butch.. I'm just curious as to how slow the retracts go up on the real RAH-66. Also, will you try to mimic that speed? It's looking great.

"How high do they go? Are those things hard too fly? How much do they cost?

Wemo,

I dont remember the actual time it took to retract the gear. The gear was not that complex on its basic operation however the timing of movement was. It had to fold, in then up, and just the opposite for extention. Down then out. My gear will not move as the full scale, however it will mimic the movement and speed and also appear to work as a shock strut.

I was hoping to get a little further along in the flights before starting the next phase but its been really cold here in NY. I am sorry but I am not going stand out in this weather to fly. "It aint hap-in"
I started some of the finish detail on the fuse. I installed the grills on the cooling exits. They are made of copper mesh and very fine so it looks really good. I also completed the wiring module. Geezz, am I ate up or what. I should have the gear hopefully by mid next week. A few pics of the screens.

One thing we all know for sure "She's Hott" and yes that's with two "t's"

Finished the inlet screens and the co-pilot IP, or the forwad side of the IP. Even has cooling fins on the boxes. It's rough but you get the idea.

QA (Ro, aka Girlfriend) wrote me up on the inlet screen. I think the remark was, "Your not going to leave that crap like that are you". After she informed me the error of my ways, I had to fix it. Here are some before and after pics. I still have to re-install the mesh but Ro was correct. Its much better now.

Thanks guys,

I enjoy posting the pics and like always, if you think of somthing or see somthing chime in. After QA squaked me on the inlets, I looked at my DOC's and felt the copper mesh was just a bit too small. This screen mesh from VARIO is a perfect match for this installation. Also made the cooler for the main gear box oil and worked on the YAPS head assembly.

Some pics for my fellow heli dudes,

Butch

Good question Fender.

During the test program, the aircraft never flew with the gun system. It was fitted, however the program was canceled prior to flight in that configuration. I have chosen to model
"The Duke", prototype # 2, BuNo 95-0327 during its flight envelope expansion stage. It will not have the 'Dog Ears" on the tail, the "Darth Vader" helmet on the main rotor, or a working NVPS. Yes it will have orange in the weapon bays, not Hellfires.

Maybe somthing like this:
