Hi all,

Got a Raptor 30. Thinking of upgrading to an OS 46. I live at 5000', and know that a bit longer blades/more power will help. Have heard that I could just get a longer boom/belt, new engine mount and blades. Is this true or do I need to change the gearing, too?

Any feedback is appreciated. Also, how's it compare to a 50? (Not the hyper - can't afford it)

I did about the same thing. Leave the 30 gearing, the 46 seems to like it over the 50 gears. You'll need to change to a 50 mount and fan.

On mine, I stayed with the 30 boom. Hirobo 570 blades, and 30 gearing. The machine actually did it's best with 550's and 50 gears, but the point is to run larger blades, so on went the 570's, then the gearing was incorrect for optimum. My guess would be, for your altitude, the 30 gearing for sure. This motor/heli combo also needs a governor to do it's best.

I ran both the 30 boom and blades(550mm) which gave me crazy head speed and response if you want that, then I went to 50 boom and 600mm blades and that made a nice combo. Now I've gone to Hyper 50 with a MP2 and the 50 gearing. That's FUN

I did the same thing OS 46 . long boom short boom ,long blades 600mm ,short blades 550mm . 50 gearing and 30 gearing . If you already have the OS46 go 50 gearing and 580 or 600 blades. If you havent got the engine yet ,get the OS 50 !!!! do not buy the OS46!!

The 46 with the carb mod runs smoother than a 50.

That said, I destroyed my 30/46 and then bought a 50. I will never buy or recommend a 30 again. The 50 will outfly the 46 in any configuration.

True, to a point. They do require some serious fiddling before it does everything well. The 46 is far from user friendly, and I wouldn't recommend the motor to someone who isn't intimate with tuning. I chose to do the 46 conversion, just because the "experts" at the time said it never worked well. Mine runs very well, but you're right , the 50/600blades will do eveything better.

I ran my 46 both as a 30 and as a 50. Just upgraded to the Hyper 50...which is MUCH easier to tune.

The 46 did a good job...but some days it would have massive power, and other days it would be pretty wimpy. It wasn't consistant at all. The hyper is much better in terms of set it and forget it....oh, plus gobs more power

All in all the 46 was a good engine in both the 30 and the 50 configurations.
