Hey all,

Just looking for your thoughts on the 977 for general use for charging bateries for an electric helicopter. I hve NiMH now, but can forsee going to LiPO in the future.... the norm. I've seen a few comments on the 969 in the past archives, but couldn't dig up anything on the 977. Any ideas, fellows?

If you already have a nickel-chemistry charger that you are happy with, just buy a lithium-only charger to supplement it. I have the AstroFlight 109. It works great! It can even charge large (9s4p) packs.

Check out their web site: http://www.astroflight.com/ They also sell a balancer, power meter, servo tester, and nickel chargers.

Well, that's the thing....

...I have just the standard issue wall charger for the 9.6v packs that I have now, and want to upgrade them. Thing is, I can se going to LiPO, but then again, NiMH is so cheap (I've seen two 700mah batt's sell on eBay for $15), that its hard for meto understnad why we're all caught up in LiPO when you can have 2 or three NiMH packs for the same price. I mean, assuming you're not a professional flying inverted, backwards and in circles all the time. Hell, I have enough just trying to stay in the air. But, you know... maybe I'll get my handson a LiPO pack some day and want to charge it... so I'm looking at an everything charger. And it looks like the MRC 977 is about similar on paper to the Hobbico Elite, so I was looking for input on that comparison...but I haven't seen a post yet byanyone who has a 977. Curious!

I have the mrc 969. Its okay, but not for lipos. I just got a muliplex LN-5014 for $80 and it does it all. Way better than mrc in my opinion.

Multiplex vs MRC

Hi, thanks for the input with the Multiplex. I took a look at it, but unfortunately, it looks like it just has DC input, whereas I'm looking for an AC/DC machine. I've also heard the 977 is much improved over the 969 in LiPO respect... I'm curious to hear from anyone with first hand experience about that.

Mike,

I can't comment on the 977 vs. 969, but it seems a whole bunch of chargers are DC only these days. I think you may be limiting yourself if you require an AC/DC unit. One simple answer is to use the power supply out of an old PC (around here they're free for the taking). That will let you use your DC charger on AC or at the field.

Good luck. I also strongly recommend a balancer for LiPo's.
