I love my 90 to bits but this problem has let me down at the field now too many tiimes
Ive got through 2 one way starter bearing and had the shaft shear on one , lately the hex socket part keeps coming loose , ive tried to keep away from loctite but it failed again today .
I hate this design , is there a major mod I can do to get rid of this crap starter which is the same one fitted on the .30 so how can it possibly cope with the .90

It is very possible that improper engine to clutch shaft alignment is leading to the failed starter one-way bearings and sheared shaft.

Where did the shaft shear?

As for the starter hex adapter, I have a total of 450+ flights on my 2 R90's combined this year and have only had one problem with the adapter. My problem was shortly after I put it together and got it in the air. I had misaligned the set screws and was not perfectly centered on the flats.

I mark the flat locations on the top of the starter shaft and only put in one set screw at first, so I can see the other flat through the second set screw hole.

You can also change the starter shaft and adapter to the 90SE part numbers. The end of the starter shaft is not machined down to a smaller diameter. The diameter is the same from one end to the other, thus giving a larger clamping area.

BTW, Both of my R90's have the smaller diameter adapter (same as the 30/50/60&STD90).

When all else fails, press the start shaft into the clutch, and be done with it.

The pressed fit mod requires some machining backround, and some equipment. The problem with many of the fixes that are out there, is that not everyone can accomplish these at home. I would try the SE set-up first.

Also make sure you get the engine/starter shaft alignment dead on when you put it back together. Misalignment puts a heck of a load on the starter one way bearing.

Yes I spin the shaft clockwise by hand moving the engine around until the least resistence is felt.
