Simulators are the best thing to happen to RC since carbon fiber. Everyone can enjoy them, and everyone who intends to fly heli's should be REQUIRED to buy one, if for no other reason than to help newbies avoid injury to themselves and spectators. The savings in uncrashed birds is just a bonus.

Salesman who work behind counters at RC stores should push them like they were free money, which for chopper jockeys is exactly what they are.

I flew several months with G3, over a hundred gallons worth of flight time very well and very enjoyably spent, then jumped into a Raptor50 as my first RC machine of any kind with very little difficulty. No need for hours and hours of hover time if you've already had lots of sim time.

Mode 1 is used mostly in Europe. Since you're in the USA, get a Mode 2 controller. 95% of all US RC folk use Mode 2, w/collective and throttle on the left. You'll be able to get a lot more help at the field one day when you start flying real birds.

Here's a list that may catch your eye. Click to enlarge, twice if needed.
