What would be the most ideal breaking in procedure for a 2 stroke heli engine?

Put it in your heli, start it at the factory recommended settings for needle valves, then run it a bit on the rich side for the first few flights followed by gradual carb adjustments as it breaks in. Fly judiciously for those first flights, making sure you're not going too lean.

Yeah what he said. But I would add the idea is to run the engine rich and hover just enough to get the engine warm,,,then set it down and let it cool ,,,,hover to get it warm ,,,then land to cool it. A couple minutes hovering and then 2 min cooling, Do this for a couple tanks then start to lean it slowly for the entire gallon. The second galllon you can run a bit longer but still cool it off. By the end of the second gallon yu should be pretty close to the needle setting you will run it at. Then go fly and have fun,,,JMHO

I agree that you don't want to run it too rich and hover for the entire break-in but the first two tanks on a new engine there is enough friction between new parts that it's hard to get it "too rich" and the engine still have power to lift off. This is the sorta thing that everyone has an opinion on,,,this is JMHO

Well, see thats what I thought, though I found that breaking in the engine in the 4 stroke procedure is much more successful then shoving it in the heli and breaking it in.

This is what I do:

1- Put the engine on a breaking in stand.

2- Put a decent sized propellar as per the engine type.

3- Set the needle to the factory recommended setting.

4- Start the engine with a chicken stick, usually two flicks and it's ups.

5- Open up the throttle a little

6- Open up the needle to make it rich.

7- Continue to repeat step 5 and 6 until the throttle is open all the way.

8- Listen to the engine till you hear the 4 stroke going on.

9- Run about 1 tank on this method.

10- Repeat step 3 to 8 but this time close the needle from time to time to bring the engine rpm up to speed. For 5 to 10 second intervals.

11- Repeat step 10 till you complete 5 tanks.

With this procedure I do notice that the engine seems to perform better then shoving them into heli's and breaking them in.

This procedure is used pretty much for airplanes and rc car engines.

Plenty of lubrication and enough heat build up to have things seat in properly.

What you guys think ?

You get some of the most informed information to be had from one of the most knowledgeable people in the world about model helicopters and still are not willing to believe. Thats what I think. Chris

You take what you want from others and then form your own opinion,,,That's why we come here to find out differnent ways of doing the same thing,,,,
