Hey Guy's
I'm setting up a Concept 46 VR to put in scale fuzz. I need to get the mechanics all trimmed and flying before I fit it to the fuzz.
My problem is I can't get the tail to stop drifting in a hover.
At a hover, I feed in power and the tail pulls to the left, decrease power tail goes to the right, at a head height hover tail drifts to the left. The Gyro seems to be set up right, head speed is good.
Tail Drive shaft seems to be a bit springy
Futaba 401 backed up by a S9254, tail blades 85 mm.
Any help would be great.
Happy flying.
Patty..

Did you inhibit revo mixing in the transmitter?

My vr46 is rock solid with a 401.

The wire drive on those is like an elastic band, for sure wont help.
The best mod on the 32/46VR is the NHP carbon tail dive kit.

But that aside it could be that your 401 is not in AVCS or heading lock mode,
After initialization you must have a solid LED lit which goes out when you apply a rudder command.

If your in rate mode which is a blinking LED (and you want to fly in rate mode) then you will need to set up revo mixing for assending and decending to stop the yaw.

TBH not many people (that i know) use rate mode any more.
Sorry if this academic, just need to clear that up

Other than that,
Too low Headspeed
Nasty bendy plastic too short tail blades
Binding in the tailrotor pitch mechanism.
Motor too rich

If you think everything is set up properly, ie: gyro, TX, etc. I would suspect the tial drive. Like Tony said, It is very "soft" and NEEDS to be replaced with the C/F shaft especially if you are the least bit aggressive with your flying style.

just my two cents.

The wire drive may not be as stiff as a tube drive, but it isn't THAT soft. The stock VR should hold the tail position just fine while hovering as long as the gyro is working.

The symptom you describe is EXACTLY what would happen if the radio still had revolution mixing enabled, or if the gyro was in "normal" mode. When you initialize the electronics, the gyro should blink for a few seconds, then come on steady. Is this the case? Also, did you ever set the neutral point with the gyro in normal mode? What gain are you running on the gyro? Are you sure revolution mixing is disabled and all the revo points set to zero?

I have a scale 222 with Nexus mechanics, and flew a Concept 32VR for years. Both machines were wire-drive and had NO problem holding the tail during climbs or descents.

The wire tail drive IS a problem during tail-stress maneuvers such as backwards/sideways flight and coming out of piro maneuvers or stall-turns. In these maneuvers the wire loads up (twists) and you get a bounce on the tail when the wire unloads.

Tail Drift still !!

Hey Guy's
Thanks for all your inupt, But ive just about had this thing.
I'm using JR 10X hei,all the mixing's settings are off,i have a good heading lock on the 401,ive even moved the gyro to the back of the heli like my other helis,AND STILL no good DAMM !!!
Its flyable but im not happy with it,I have 4 other helis with 401's on them, never had this problem !! i must add there all Belt drive.
So next step ! change the rubber band system (hehehehehehe !!!) in the tail drive to a carbon torque tube system, and we'll see how that goes.
Guy's i'll look at anything, any help would be great.
Happy flying.

What motor are you using here?

In mine it was an os46fx and it was a royal pain in the a$$$.

It had a lean spot right at the hover point and would turn the tail into a wollowy mush.
rich lean rich lean ect, sounded horrible, very harsh.

There are mods for this but i never did it.

Tail Drift !

Hey Tony.
I'm using an OS 50-SX-H,
And yeah it does go lean & rich at hover,
What was the mod you were talking about. It’s not the Cat’s eyes Mod on the carby??
I’ve pulled the boom of it, I’m going to make a carbon drive shaft, hope that fixes the problem.
I’ll let you know how I go.
If you can think off anything else, any help would be great.
Pat.

Well, on the os46 there was 2 mods, one was drilling a hole in the front of the carb body,
there are posts here somewhere but thats not the issue as your not running that carb.

on the OS50 with the 40E carb then yes, something has to be done,
you already know about the cat eye mod and the 1000's of posts on here about it.
alternativley theres the supre tiger G61 series2 carb which works a treat or the newer hyper carb 60Lh

a rough raspy motor at hover will send the gyro nuts.
May want to explore this avenue 1st?

FWIW when i ran an OS50 with 40E carb on coolpower15% it was never a problem, any other fuel and it was..just food for thought.

Now more tail drift !!!

Hi Guys.
Well she going like a rocket now, I ended up building a totally new drive system, I made it from a 6mm carbon aluminum arrow shaft, turned up new drive ends and milled flats for the ends & put two bearing supports up the boom to support the shaft. I’ve put 5 tanks through it fly’s like its on rails, the tail sticks like glue!! Rock solid!!
So the Airwolf is full steam ahead now..
Happy flying.

Thats great news,
I guessed it was going to be that elastic band wire drive.
Gave me so much greif till i swapped it out.

Good luck with the wolf project, post some pics when its done?
