Hi guys!

As u are well aware buying a sim can be really frustrating specially when you dont have a state of the art machine and some cosely matched sims to choose from....

Im confused regarding the specs of my laptop and doubts whether it can support either Reflex or AFPD

I currently have a Toshiba Laptop (A75 S226). Its a P4 with a ATI Mobility Radeon 900 graphics card with 64 MB shared Video RAM.

The clock speed is 3.00Mhz with 512MB DDR SDRam

My confusion is to do primarily with my graphics card-

According to the MRC (MODEL RECTIFIER) website the card should atleast be 128MB (dedicated) to run Reflex smoothly. Im really interested in buying Reflex but now im not sure whether my comp can handle the demands......do feel they may be inline for AFPD but this is just from what i have heard ....seems the processing demands are lesser in AFPD.

Interestingly i have downloaded the demo of Reflex and after setting the same to lesser resolutions the frames run very smoothly (the frames start getting shaky beyond 1024x768). Even smoke effects are well simulated......Im surprised with the results as rc-sim.de clearly mentions that shared memory is a 'real killer' .and as mentioned above my card has shared memory!! this has further added to my confusions!! not sure if the fullversion would be more demanding though.

i have received reponses fromm friends discouraging me from XTR...just thought i may crosscheck with you guys out there...any advises whether i could go for AFPD with the setup mentoned above??

Any help will be valuable as im literally getting sleepless nights surfing the web for the right advise..

Thanks in advance....

Happy landings!!

Futaba six pin port....please help!

Hi Buddy!

Thanks for the prompt response, to be honest never expected a response this quick...pleasantly surprised!!

Appreciate your honest response....i guess now it really is down to AFPD. I have the Futaba 6DA transmitter which i intend to use, realised yesterday its got a six pin port (round) at the back-

http://www.futaba-rc.com/discontinued/futj65.html

Well the AFPD site did not list an option for such a port....but finally i found a site which gave me some hope-

http://www.milehighwings.com/usb_cables.htm

At the bottom of the page is a link to a compatibility chart-

http://www.milehighwings.com/sim_compatibility.htm

The response in this chart for AFPD is favourable but it says this inteface can operate as a secondary interface only...not sure what the same means.

Would be great if you could enlighten me a bit on this or any other solution that you may have.

Thanks again!!

I'm running XTR on a 3ghz Radeon 9550/256 machine. Even on this machine the framerate is effected a bit by the very close proximity of a heli depending on the model and scenery. But otherwise runs a smooth constant 75fps under decent settings which happens to be my monitor's refresh rate.

I believe on most machines XTR becomes pretty much useless at under 30fps. Out of curiosity I would try benchmarking the XTR Demo on your machine to see how close the framerate comes to your monitor's refresh rate. I like Fraps as a nifty benchmarking gadget.

The Demo is supposed to closely represent the full version, right? Maybe I'll download the Demo and see what it's like myself.

Edit:
I downloaded the Demo and it seems to me it has the same demands as the full version. So I'd say if the Demo runs at a decent framerate on your system then so should the full version.

Thanks Capt....

Hi Capt!

Thanks for the initiative!!...appreciate your help.....well yes the demo does work once the settings are kept low.

I guess i would start feeling the pinch after a while when the constraints of low settings would start affecting me (also i feel its a rather expensive if incase the sim gives problems tomorrow). Have been thinking inlines of AFPD as it seems it requires lesser churning...not sure whether you have any exp on AFPD or AFP...im weary of getting stuck with someting which would not do justice for my madness of rc flying......

Thanks!!

PS: any inputs whether the photorealistic sceneries run smoothly on AFP??

If your local hobby shop is worth a darn, They should let you load and test Reflex there, as long as you agree that if it works you purchase from them on the spot. I realize you may be able to save a few dollars by purchaseing elsewhere, but we need to support our local shops or loose them. Also you may be able to find someone locally that could provide the same service. Reflex is awesome. It does have a learning curve, but it all those features and adjustabilities that make it so desireable yet a little more time consuming to learn. There is plenty of help here on RR. Just search, its all ben covered before. You'll hate yourself if you find later it works on your machine.

RE: Reflex Demo

Hi !!

Thanks for the response....well i did download the demo and found it amazing. I have been advised earlier that my computer hw may not be upto it to handle the graphics, but heres what i found out-

I can acheive fluid graphics with the diplay mode maxed out to 800x600x16. anything beyond and i can see signs of the frames getting shaky marginally...Also i have set the panaroma resolution to the lowest.

i do know that the the graphics with this display mode is not nearly half as good as what can be acheived but im amazed with what i have seen this far.

Not sure if you have ever set your sim to settings that i have mentioned above as i assume you have a higher end machine, but would be great to know your opinion.......

cheers!!
