Another variation that does not lock up. No additional bearings either.

Al

It's for a Rappy 50. Full sequence of pics in Gallery, if you want to make one.

Excellent Work

Pete,

You are the man.

You have taken it to the next level with the hardened main shaft retaining pin. No more broken lower Jesus bolts and your unit provides great stabilization of the main gear when belt tension is applied. Too bad we didn't see this in the latest version of the Raptor 50.

Excellent precision work from my friend in the UK.

Agreed, some beautiful machining but the solution you have is just like the protype of the original auto hub for the Raptor 50. I have one of the originals from the guys that invented it 4 years ago and gave the rights to Ricks RC for manufacturing.

The plastic auto gear solution form TT is a very cost effective idea but has the problem of being made of deformable plastic. Tighten the lower jesus bolt too much and you deform the lower portion of the auto gear and it rubs on the auto hub. I fixed that by turning down to 25mm the lower portion of the auto hub.

The other problem that all auto hubs have is the rubbing (during autos) of the upper portion of the auto gear against the auto hub from belt tension since the lower attachment to the main shaft is not a solid connection. There will be some give allowing the upper portion to rub against the auto hub. Keep it clean and lubed and that can be kept from locking up.

The big bearing (25 x 34 x 4) solution is the best if you can find a bearing that has minimal rolling friction. Again, this only a concern during autos.

Wolfgang, I had thoughts at one time, of running a Torrington thrust washer package between the two gears.

I'm not clear on how that would help. The problem is the side loads caused by tail belt tension.

Thrust bearing squaring off to the bottom side of the grey gear. Without any verticle, any side loading of the white gear is dissipated there.

Al, I believe the plastic auto gear's flexibility, along with the indirect force vectors and the little clearance to begin with, will not prevent the rubbing. And that's if you can keep the bearing package tight to begin with.

Funny, seems that "torrington bearing" is used to describe the one way needle bearing in the hub and also the needle thrust bearing used in other applications.

Looks like Torrington, now owned by Timkin, made a variety of bearings.

Wolfgang, my thoughts exactly. I think a REAL taildrive is the answer. The current white gear is a patch. I was disappointed to see the new "titanium" V3 doing the same old same old.

I would also remove the lower main bearing, and put it below the maingears.

fwiw..

I fixed mine with $.05 worth of 80 grit paper and some triflow.....never an issue...200 + flights and counting...

John.

P.S....Best fix I've seen is the mainshaft in the drill trick...Remoulds the white hub for a near perfect fit, a little triflow and you're all set...
