Well, nick, if you give it some thought, you'll notice that, once the 9Z is gone (and it IS going), there will be a huge gap between the 9C and the 14MZ. Futaba needs to plug that hole.

Many, many of us simply refuse to pay two grand for a transmitter, regardless of how good it is or what it might do. A ten or twelve channel radio in the same price range, or perhaps a tad more, than the 9Z WOULD sell well, methinks.

Keep in mind that the scale and jet guys are the only ones who need/want all those extra channels. Those of us who fly helis and/or sport planks get along quite well with the eight offered by the 9Z.

I said all of that to say this; I'll bet my pension that Futaba is working on such a "gap-filling" radio as we talk here. And I was told, flat out, that the 9Z WILL be dropped. What I wasn't told is when.

There are economic factors in play here. For instance, The Empire doesn't want to get stuck with a huge inventory of 9Zs. Back when the first snippets of info regarding the 14MZ (and it was indeed supposed to be a 12 channel) leaked out, I was told about it. I gave as much information as I thought pertinent to a fellow on the forum here, in an attempt to keep him from buying a JR 10X- which would not have satisfied him because he wanted to fly complex planks too.

Next thing I knew, my source, a good friend, was calling me asking to not say anything more. The Empire was wearing HIM about the "news leaks". The bastards didn't have the nuts to call ME direct. Talk about chickensh@t...

Anyway, the point of THAT is to illustrate that such news about the new radio will be guarded more closely than nuclear secrets. The Empire takes that nonsense seriously. I had a friendship strained over it. So now they can kiss my ass. I'll still buy from them because of their monopoly; but as for trying to promote their stuff... forget it.

So, nick, nobody made up anything. It was a legitimate question from Steve, who is probably wondering, like me, what to do with his soon-to-be-obsolete 9Z...

Heck, Steve, I just plan to fly mine until it pukes. THEN I'll worry about what to replace it with...

I don't even have a 9Z. Right now I'm doing fine with a couple of 7C's, but the thought of faster update/processor speed definitely appeals to me. I agree that I don't ever plan to spend $2000.oo for a radio and a lot of other folks feel the same way. The niche for 14MZ's is going to be pretty small. You might not guess it from reading here because all the guys who actually have one are keeping up a steady rant about how great they are, but the sales of the 14 aren't even close to 1% of their 4 channel plank radios. So what's a manufacturer to do ? My question was just based on some simple calculations about marketing and development costs. Someone at Futaba already has a downsized 14MZ in hand, you can bet the bank on it. I was hoping someone here would be willing to tell us about it. Thanks. steve

Just spoke to our local Futaba dealer. He confirmed the arrival of the new 12mz in our country this March 2006. It will be exactly like the 14mz except for a monochromatic screen instead of colored and will cost US$1,600.

I'll believe the validity of that statement by your dealer when I see it. I fly for Futaba in the US. There is ZERO marketing logic to releasing a radio exactly like the 14MZ except for the color screen. You can well bet the software will be more limited in other areas as well.

Also...................I've NEVER seen Futaba JP release a radio to the market prior to showing it at either the OCT or MAY Japanese Toy Fair. Nothing new in this area was shown is OCT.

After digging through the firmware update that Futaba released for the 14MZ, I see several references to "12MZ" in it.. _HOWEVER_, there aren't that many references to 14MZ in it, so it makes you wonder..

My theory:
The product we know as 14MZ was originally designed as a 12-channel TX, and got the product name "T12MZ".
When someone later on wanted to make it 14 channels, they simply didn't change the name everywhere in their sourcecode (this is common), and it's still referenced to as it's original product name "T12MZ".

This would also explain where all the unsubstantiated "12MZ" rumors are coming from..

That looks almost exactly like what I imagined it would be. I am particularly looking forward to using that Kaos button. In a world of mediocrity, you're truly a beacon of light. steve.

Personally, I want a big red "EASY' button on my transmitter. The rolling, 4 point reversing piro, inside, outside wall of death is awfully hard.
