You need to press the pinion into the gear. The old rule was to press it as hard as you could by hand before tightening the bolts. Recently there have been a couple reports of these gears shattering, so maybe not as hard as you can, but press it in good. I use a bit of Vario titanium grease to smooth the break in. It will seem odd, and noisy and tight but that is the way to do it. I have been flying these helis for about 6 years and I have never had one get chewed up, or shatter either (I think there was a bad batch or something).

One guy who received the above advice from me (when I set his up) went to the field and some know-it-all said it was wrong and he should use the thin paper shim method (as used on main-to-pinion gears commonly). So they adjusted per that advice, and the helicopter immediately stripped the crown gear and crashed.

keepin' it real

If your crown gear/pinion meshing is correct and this is still happening then check the mesh in the tail gearbox.

If there is excess end float in the output shaft this can jar the system and cause the pinion to skip on the crown gear.

Agree w/ Stet. You want to press down that pinion onto the 4615 when
tightening the screws.

that gear is easy to strip.

It's the same deal with the Vigor CS crown gear mesh - if anything you want it every so slightly on the tight side, it will free up with a bit of wear. Too loose and it will wear very quickly. if the crown gear is warped it's a real pain since you get tight spots and slack spots.
