Hi all,

I've been battling the balancing issue with my heli since I did the upgrade. I use the 900mAh lipos so I was required to add clay to the heli. I fixed that tonight. Here's what I did:

I cut 1 inch off the tail boom.

On the GWS mount there is about 1 inch long piece of plastic that sticks out over the motor. I cut this off since it's useless for the direct drive upgrade. After cutting it off I weighed both the stock tail holder without motor, gears, and blade and it came in at .10 oz. I then weighed the GWS mount with the tail fin but without the motor or blade. The total weight of the GWS mount was .10 oz. Exactly the same as the stock one. All of the added weight is in the motor itself.

Anyway lopping the 1 inch off and removing that bit of plastic now allows me to balance the heli without adding clay. the pack is still all the way forward but no clay is needed to balance. Tail authority didn't seem to be any different. I've not flown it a ton yet though but it seemed just as good as before.

Yeah, when I first did my DD tail, I cut an inch off my boom as well. Wasn't intentional, as I couldn't unglue the OEM mount. So I just cut it off instead. Made the overall length about 1.5" shorter. Turns out that was beneficial, as I'm able to keep my c of g by moving my lipo's all the way to the front of the battery tray. Guess my dumb luck was good afterall.

Flight time with stock NIMH battery

I am thinking to do the DD upgrade. Does it shorten the flight time? I will still be flying with the stock NIMH battery. Thank you

I have noticed a decrease in flying time by a couple of minutes using lipo's after converting to DD.

Heli PIC,

I did my DD conversion yeasterday and I noticed that I need 2-3 extra clicks of throttle/collective to hover. The flight time is definately shorter, about 17min vs 19min on 3s1200, stock motor and sym blades.

In any case the heli flies much better, tail is much more stable and using rudder doesn't affect main rotor speed as much. On stock setup, if I used a lot of right rudder to turn quickly, the heli would drop. With a lot of left it would raise. DD seems to put a more constant load on the battery.

Mike.

The larger geared prop is waaay more efficient than the small DD prop. Nothing new here BTW.

The small prop revs up faster due to the lower moment of inerrtia and makes for a more stable tail. I tried the DD setup and changed back due to the buzzy sound.

As I have learned to stay out of the grass, hover practise on smooth concrete, etc, the geared TR does a great job.

The larger DD motor offers more power at a lower efficiency than the geared TR and thus, uses more battery power during operation.

DD Mod with Stock NIMH Battery

Most people here have upgraded to 3S Lipo. I am wondering if any one has tried the DD Mod with the stock battery. Will this combination work? Thank you

I have not upgraded to lipos yet, but it is not to far off. So with that stated I did notice a lower flying time, but to be honest. I think it was due to the fact with the DD tail I am able to keep the heli under control which in tern adds the long air time.

Thanks Heli PIC. Would those Bell Hiller Blade grips be a good thing, also?

DD tail mod

quick question on the tail mod. I lowered the gain a bit, and the heli flies nice, but I notice that while doing slow piro's the tail has a hesitation, just like clock work. Literally it looks like a secon hand on an older clock, Is this just a gain issue? anyone esle see this?

Thanks
Bob

How hot are your tail motors getting in flight after doing the DD mod (part from Chris at Heliworks)? Mine is getting extremely hot. HaveI missed something in this set up? 3s lipo, BTW.

Thanks,

Ben Minor

Mine barely gets warm. After 10 minutes of non stop hovering the main motor is way hotter than the tail.

The tail motor is not very hot after a flight, ditto on the main motor though.

I use the stock battery now, and I run the prop in tractor mode. My rear motor is not getting hot at all. I will be moving to lipos soon, I will let you know if I see a diffrence.

This may be a pusher vs. tractor issue, then.

Time to switch it over.

Love mine also....stock was fine for learning....but the DD mod in tractor mod is soooo much better.
