What would be even better would be pictures of the crash site itself - before the pieces have been collected. This would support some discussion (?) of the kinetics and dynamics of crashes - i.e. why this piece landed here, the size of the holes in the ground, angle of attack, etc., etc. Sort of a 'heli crime scene investigator' theme.

Let's all take that camera with us to the flying field (and then try hard to NOT have to use it!)

Pictures are great, and I feel for all - now, where are the folks with videos of theirs or other's crashes? I've seen so many close calls in videos, but not any full on crashes...

I finally had the courage to try and make my BCP go inverted. I rolled upside down and added negative pitch and I had a boom strike. It fell like a brick from about 75ft and crashed in the neighbor's yard.

Here is the damage:

Bent Main Shaft and Cracked Drive Gear
Bent Flybar
Cracked CF Blades
Broken Landing Skid
Broken CF Tail Rotor
Cracked Main Frame in 3 places
Bent Tail Rotor Drive Gear
Cracked Paddle Control Frame Pushrod
Couldn't get Main Shaft retaining collar or bearings off of the main shaft because it was so bent.

BEFORE:

AFTER:

It was disappointing, but maybe I can learn something from it. I am also sort of excited to try and fix it, cuz that's half the fun!

Any suggestions to avoid a boom strike in the future?

your biggest mistake was relying on that "voltwatch". They are not accurite. To get a true reading, its better to buy a unit for the pits which you connect to the battery, and gives you a reading of the battery whilst under a 1Mah load.

Voltwatch will show your lots of readings, the good ones being when there is little load on the battery

That was that Raptor 50s first ever flight.
A last minute change of crystals coupled with no tape to secure it ended in desaster.
John who has not flown it yet has now rebuilt it and awaiting his first flight tomorrow so you may get a few more nasty pics. lol

Hi craneyum, keepin the thread alive......

I cut my teeth with Nexus's a few years back, as you say, a cheap bird to repair....

Here's what happened to my first one

Ripped the main shaft out of the frames! Worst bit was the sound, like 100 plastic rulers being snapped in 1 second

Nose in thumb trouble, didn't try that again for a while.

However, in this case it was an uneconomical repair and was grounded for a couple of months. Then I bought a new kit off a LHC shelf for £100 cash - results in my gallery.

Anyone got a number for Heli-widows, my wife wants to join!!
