I was hoping to get feed back form every one on the best brand speed control to use for electric Helicopter flight. Sort of an informal poll. Please include a short explanation as to why yo prefer your favorite. Please only include your opinion if you have tested the unit first hand.

I like the Kontronic ESC's. Easy to setup. Govenor mode works great. Slow start is fantastic. Timming is auto adjusting.

I like the Castle Phoenix range of ESCs. They're good value for money and easily programmed using a computer (they can also be programmed using the radio, but the computer is much easier...) After sales support is excellent, with email answers to questions as well as phone support. They also stand behind their product with a very good warranty replacement policy.

With 125 amp and high voltage models their range now covers just about anything.

I have one plane and 3 helis using Castle Phoenix ESCs and am very happy with the way they perform.

Have had experience with Kontronik, Schulze, CC, and a few others I dont care too much for. So far Kontronik (smoothest softstart Ive experienced), IMHO, is the best and is cheaper than Schulze. Schulze is good but expensive. I currently have a CC HV45 for my E Raptor and it works pretty well. Soft start for gov mode is a little rough but not bad.

So....if you have the $$ go with Kontronik, if you want something cheaper but with good preformance go with the CC HV series.

Kontronic is my fav by a long way, tried most of the others (except schultz) . Only have experience on the Jazz range, but they are superb.

tomthumb come over and I'll let you check out my ESC collection.

I will not run anything but Kontronik or Schulze in my helis. Each has its pro and con.

Kontroniks:
I have the Smile, Beat, and Jazz series. Smile is their basic line, works well. Beat and Jazz has dynamic timing and frequency adjustments which automatically set itself for the most optimal setting on the motor used. The smaller Jazz (40-6-18) has efficient switching powered BEC which can tolerate higher voltage without getting hot. All of them have perfect soft start and governor routine in heli mode, and comes with mode for plane/car/FAI/boat application. only downside is the inability to set the timing/frequency manually. You have to accept what they think as optimal setting. Plus the earlier firmware versions (v3 or earlier) has problems with some outrunner motors.

Schulze:
The old Future series was good reliable workhorse. But they are application specific meaning if you buy a heli model, it can not be used on a plane.
The current Universal series has dip switches for easy programming and setting flexibility. The built in heatsink on the "k" models are nice touch for helis. And currently they are the only one that has bugfree ESC capable of handling 12s or higher input voltage. (Don't even compare these to Castle's HV ESC.) Schulze ESC had rough soft starts with some of the earlier firmwares, but current revisions are every bit as good as the Kontroniks.

Under same conditions, meaning same motor/battery/heli/pinion/blade/etc, Schulze ESC has noticable higher power at the expense of shorter duration. Kontronik's ESC seems to focus more on efficiency thus the "softer" setting resulting in longer duration.

The price between the two are supposedly similar, but thanks for GreatPlanes we are able to get Kontroniks at lower costs, making them cheaper than if you were to buy from Germany.

Large Helis either the Kontronix or the Schultze. Smaller Helis like the TRex the Align 35amp.
