Hi
i was out flying today with my raptor 50 with hyper in and i noticed when i was doing tic tocs it was losing a lot of head speed and bogging badly(a lot more than usuall) so a guy that i go flying with also noticed the problem and so i landed and we richened the engine about 1/2 a turn this seeed to solve the problem for about 2 minutes so again i tried more tic tocs and the first 3 were fine then the same problem occured this time the engine leaned right out on its own n flight and was making a noise such as the exaaust had fallen off noticing this i brung the heli down to see what the problem was and about 3 feet off the floor there was a pop and the engine cut later on we stripped down the engine and there it was a hole in the middle of the piston. As the engine has only had 2 gallons of fuel through it i was a bit annoed as to why it had sone this so early on.

has any one else had this sort of problem with their hyper thats almost new?

Strange. Did you use a tool inserted through the glow plug hole to lock the engine during assembly? If so, this may have stressed and weakened the middle of the piston.

i always use a tooth brush through the crank shaft to tighten up the fan nut.

I've seen plenty of folks that scorched their engine in the first couple of gallons. A hole in the piston sounds like a lean run to me. Is the top of the piston black?

Tic toc's load the engine a lot,and it was probably lean and got hot so it detonated and broke the piston.

I don't think your engine was ready for Tic-Toc's after 2 gal.Maybe Tic,but definatly not Toc
Buddy at the field had the same thing happen to him.Ran the bastard lean, head was screeming and bum.We took the plug out and saw a hole in piston .
You do need to break in the emgine. You don't have to overdo it,just take it easy for firs few gallons.

An improperly tuned motor will be destroyed whether broken in or not. Also, not much breaking in will go on after a gallon or so.

Is that the nitro content or oil content, of Bekra fuel you are using? What makes you think the engine was on the rich side? Chris

the bekra 16 is 16% nitro

i think it is on the rich side because there was plooms of smoke coming out that you could barely see the heli when it was on the floor.

Bekra has 18% synthetic oil .
I've had my OS50SXH out of my Raptor while I've been trying a new engine . Today I went to refit the OS and happened to notice that there is a bloody hole in the side of the piston on the exhaust side about the size of a couple of peas just over half way down the piston . The engine had been running OK so I guess that it must have happened right at the end of my last flight !
I think that it is time for an aftermarket ABC piston and liner .

At the end of the day , it gets dark .

Unless a part went through the piston, it was too hot. What do you think happened? Chris

The other day i was flying my raptor 50 with a hyper and I noticed the engine rpm was very high, so i adjusted the needle but was still not ok I even changed the throttle curve, still no luck! Finally checked the clutch as suggested here on RR but it seems ok. Now i noticed the engine is also down on power, After reading the posts on this topic i'm pretty sure i've also cooked the engine Also the heli is making a metallic sound for a few seconds on starting and once the engine is cut. Will pull out the engine and check tomorrow.

Those sound very much like the signs that my Hyper had before it blew up so it dosent look promising

The engine has been sent away to be repaired so iv just chucked all the equipment into my new evo 50 with standard OS in for the time being.
What do you think happened?
you cannot really tell all the other parts of the engine seem fine just a hole in the top of the piston and lots of metal shavings everywhere in the crankcase. i also noticed that the top of the piston is very thin metal is this normal with the hyper?

this normal with the hyper?
That is normal with an OS 50. As Douglas said above, detonation put the hole in the top of the piston. You also don't need to be lean to detonate. Too much load, will stove in the top of the piston, pretty easily.
