What are these things made out of? I want to try one but don't want to pay $5 shipping on a $.49 part. Could I use a similar sized rubber washer or something similar to wrap the wire around.

Search this forum for ferrite. Here's a good link: Ferrite

No, a rubber O ring will not work.

$5 shipping on a 50 cent ferrite is not so bad.

Crush, you have a Radioshack near you?? I got a ring for $5 bucks, and it actually works better than the .49 cent ones you are looking at.... Its more like a tube rather than a ring... Here is how a ferrite choke (ring) works, the magnetic field it emmits is very low, but is enough to trap unwanted interference from getting past it... the more loops through the choke, the more it can filter the signal. I used to use a ring with 6 loops through it, and some glitches still got through, since using the one from radioshack, I have only seen three glitches in the past 3 months, and I think they were due to a low transmitter battery... Here is a pic of the ring on my heli:

Here is a link to the choke on the radioshack website...

I'll stop by radioshack today and see what they have. At least I won't have to wait on shipping.

Ferrite Ring alternative...

I ordered a "Glitch be gone" from RC Hover. It consists of three ceramic chokes which are about the size of a 1/2 watt resistor. They're much lighter than the ferrite ring and small as well. I soldered mine into a short servo extension so that I could experiment with and without it. I used to experience two or three major glitches per flight. I haven't experienced any since I installed it. Here's a link to it:

ferrite chokes are used in many many different applications, because they do filter out unwanted interference... I'm sure everyone on this forum has at least one or two that they don't even know they have... hehe such as on their computer power supply... now I'm not saying deprive the said electronics of their chokes, but who am I to judge..

HeliHobby calls them the "magic ring", JR also sells them as well for around 5 bucks. I will not do up an electric heli without one. Very good thing to have indeed.

Here is a ferrite on my Shogun

And on my T-Rex as well......

Is there a specific number of times the wire should be wrapped. It looks like you wrapped it 4 times on your Trex. On others I thought it looked like more.

Hi Guys,

Overlander sells them £2.50 for two, and there small.

http://www.overlander.co.uk/results.asp?categoryid=57

When I fitted my Heliup frames I started to get glitches.

I use pcm and never had one before. I tried every thing, re routing cables etc, still glitching.

I then fitted a ferrite ring on the throttle cable next to the receiver.

Not a glitch since.

I think the box type is a totally different animal to those rings though , not saying they will not work but you can see where the extra money is going.

I don't know if this helps as well, but saw in Hornet section how someone spliced from the black wire of the ESC's battery connection and grounded it on one of the motor mount screws. Real simple to do, he claimed he had a Radio Shack EF meter of some type, went from reading 5 bars (lots of EF interference) to less than one bar due to the grounding wire. If you want more info, I'll dig up the thread so you can link to it. Props to the original poster of that thread BTW. I'm a noob, just taking info from the forum and occasionally trying to share what little I know in return.

I heard that grounding the ESC wire to some motors is catastrophic, especially outrunner types... like they are already grounded.. or something...

As far as wrapping goes, at least 4 times, more is better, once I got 6 out of an ESC wire, but that was pushing it. I wrap my current one through the Radioshack ferrite "tube once" no glitching...

But Honey, I can't live with just stock.....
