From what I recall when growing up in Massachusetts it didn't seem to make much diffeence but what did help was a light application of fertilizer before
the frost hits the pumpkin.

I lived at Ellsworth AFB for eight years, we never did anything special other than throw some fertilizer on it a couple of times.

I just applied Scotts winterizer to my lawn last weekend. The last time I run my lawnmower over my grass for the year, I lower it 1 setting shorter than what I usually mow my yard at.

Check out http://www.scotts.com for tons of tips on lawn care. It also depends on the type of grass you have too.

I don't know if really matters but for the past 30 years I have left my grass long enough that it appeared to be in need of mowing...not really long but longer than summertime growth. I feel certain that it helps to prevent damage from winter kill. In the spring I usually have an earlier and greener lawn than neighbors that do not leave the lawn a bit long in the fall...

.

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.... Dennis

I like to cut my grass a notch shorter in the fall so all the leaves blow into my neighbors yard!
