The ball joint in my swashplate that slides up and down the mast now has about .010-.015 inch vertical play in it. I have read something about this in other post but I am not sure it is exactly the same thing. I am not trying to bash Century, I would just like to know if this problem is common.

FYI I have had my first blade strike which resulted in a bent mast (about .014 TIR). The blades appear to be fine. The shaft has been straightened to .002 TIR but I am waiting for the new shaft to arrive before I fly any more. I am mentioning this because it may have something to do with the swash problem although I don’t see how it can.

I believe that there was a procedure of squashing down the top aluminum flange to tighten up this ball. Is this true?

From my experience, the slop is most likely between the ball and its socket. If this is true for yours then squashing the aluminium flange won't help. A new ball and socket will only cost a few $$. For a 10mm main shaft, a typical part number is GE 10C.
