My Hawk Pro has been running great with the new Toki 40 engine. I leave Wednesday after work to head down to College Station, Texas where I will be attending Curtis Youngblood's heli school. Life is good.

This is where my bubble bursts. Sunday I was flying my hawk and start hearing a loud noise that could only be described as something rubbing or rattling in or around the clutch bell. After a some time trying to find the area rubbing I shut it down, looked it over closer, then tried to start it up again. Engine is locked up. Flooded? Okay, take out the glow plug. Still won't crank over completely. The engine is screwed! I have only had it maybe 2 months! OS engines only for me from now on.

Anyway, my question is this. After moping around all day today I finally decided my best bet would be to try to get an OS50 Hyper and install it in my Hawk once I get down there. What parts do I need? It looks like I need #HW3018A, but do I need a new gear as well? Will the clutch that comes with the kit work on the 50 engine? It'd be real nice to be able to setup my machine with Curtis.

Thanks!

this has been talked about many many times on the Century page, do a search on the Century page only to find them,,, because the Hyper is way to powerful for 550 size blades the only way I would suggest for you to use the Hyper is if you would limit the throttle curve at the top, even at that you may have trouble tuning it,,, but I don't suggest you do it, buy the new OS 37Z

you would need,,,
14 tooth Alloy Drive Gear,, #CN2224
50 size motor mount,,,,,,, #HW3018
and a 50 size mufler,
the clutch will fit..

Toki 40...

What's actually wrong with it? I've got one now and I'm having a little tuning trouble with it. However I know it's just a tuning problem. Runs rather rich at the moment. I'm still fiddling with it.

I haven't had it apart yet, but if you turn the engine over by hand, by turning the fan, it will turn then it feels like it hits something. Feels like the piston hits against something well before compression would start. If that makes it any clearer. I'll update once I have had the engine apart.

workerant,

I second the .37 SZ purchase: I have two of them. I'm using the Hatori pipes. Amazing power for a .30. You don't need a .50 in that heli.

The OS37 will give you great performance with the Hawk Pro.

I'm sitting here staring at the piston from my TOKI. Part of the skirt is missing. If you look at the piston where there is a cutout to clear the crank, on either side of that cutout there is a piece broken off, about 8mm by 8mm. Goes in an angle down from the cutout towards the midsection and breaks off where the size of the skirt increases.

Sent pictures into Century 2 weeks ago asking what they'd do, they replied that they have the pictures but haven't said what they'd do.

There were no remains of the pieces in the engine, but some slight scoring to indicate they got pumped through (likely after getting pulverized).

Amazingly the engine still ran after this but for some reason wouldn't develop a lot of power.

Until I find out what Century will do (if anything) I'm not deciding on what to do to replace it. I've been running with my older OS32 which runs great but I would like a bit more power (and after my inverted landing at speed I need more parts).

Buy the 50, I did it, my 550 woodies hold great, (until they hit the ground!), the 50 mount, the gear and the muffler is all I did, and had no problems. A modest throttle curve might be recommended. I should show a pic of the extra tank I put on mine, the 30 size tank wouldnt last long enough, So i added another tank. I'll post a pic as soon as find my durn dig cam.

BC Don, I haven't had a chance to take the motor apart yet, but I decided I will just hold off on getting a new motor. I'll just use the schools machines and forgo getting mine setup *sigh* Would have been nice to be able to get the inverted bogging issue taken care of.

When I get back, I'll either be getting a new 50 or a 90 sized machine, then see what Century will do for me for the new motor. My OS32 doesn't run right, the Toki was suppose to replace the 32

Explain though why you would want to land inverted with any speed ;-) Sounds like an interesting story.

workerant, let me know what Century does with your engine. So far I've only received a reply that they got my message and pictures (going on 3 weeks now). I'm ready to spend some more money but I'm waiting to see what they do. I'm thinking of just getting another Pro, maybe with an OS37 (or maybe try the Toki again, not sure) plus some other things that I'd like. Note that I have a Raven 50 as well but wanted something smaller till I could get better.

Regarding "Landing Inverted" well that was an "oops". Was just doing some circuits, weather was overcast and as the Heli passed by in front of me, loosing altitude for "some reason", I see that it is completely inverted, flying great . I was so surprised I didn't know what to do, thought of giving full negative but was in "N"ormal mode so figured that wouldn't have done any good. In retrospect, if I had gone full negative and flipped my idle up switch at the same time I "may" have been able to save it. . School of hard knocks

Well, the Toki motor is nicely trashed. I finally took of the head and some piece of metal got into the piston chamber. It looked about the size and shape of a pin head. Left some nasty pits on the piston head and the underside of the cooling head. I will likely just put it back together and see if the engine will run. Doesn't matter if it does run though. I finally upgraded to a 90 sized machine I'll try to post pictures of the engine damage. When I get home.
