I have a whole list of xy coordinates of a wing profile. Can anyone tell me how to plot these?

thanks

Autocad is not what you want to plot coordinates. You'll have to draw lines "point" to "point", or create circles at each coordinate, and still draw lines center-to-center.

Try msExcel, it's set-up to enter X,Y coordinates and graph them.

Some CAD systems allow a function called "point mesh". I'm not sure about ACAD and its latest releases.

you could draw a line starting from each point then fit a spline curve to the points.

but how do I actually put these co ordinates into Autocad? I can do it one by one, but theres like 100 of them. There must be an easier way.

thedude,

either typre "point" or click the point button in the toolbar, the type the coordinates in x,y format then .

for example for pont x= 3 y= -1

type "point" press
type "3,-1" press
your done

Also if you are repeating the same command you do not have to type point again, just press enter

for example for pont x= 3 y= -1 and x= 2 y= 6

type "point" press
type "3,-1" press
press
type "2,6" press

you also could use the spline

type "spline" press
type x1,y1 coordinates inthe same format as above press
type x2,y2 coordinates inthe same format as above press
...
type xn,yn coordinates inthe same format as above press
type "c" to close spline press
type x,y coordinates for the tangent and press

hope this helps

thanks for your efforts,

these are the co ordinates below. It takes for ever typing in them one by one, is there a way you can do the whole lot in one hit?

short answer no.. a lisp routine could be written to handle the data but it shouldn't take more than 10 mins max to enter points.

there is a way. I did it for a cam design were I used Maple to calculate the points and then I imported them into autocad to draw the cam shape. I just don't remember what I did. It could have been a freeware lisp program.

Title: XLPoints 1.0
Author: K. Spiliopoulos - D. Bekris
prodtools@prodtools.com
Description: XLPoints 1.0 is the easiest way to massively draw points in AutoCAD using coordinates data in Excel. You can create new drawings or update existing ones by establishing an open channel with AutoCAD. You can define point styles and layer colors. You can also apply labels to the points using ID data, coordinates, or both. XLPoints automatically loads text data files, for example in TOPCON format.

I have done the xy coordinate plotting in autocad doing the same thing with a wing profile for an A-10. and its very easy in autocad. it takes a couple minutes but is far from hard.

If you have your data in the excel, lets say X coordinates are at A1-column... and Y-coordinates at B-column

You can build C-column as a autocad-formatted commands.

=A1 & "," & B1 & " "

...or more simple if they are both at a single A-column: =A1&" "

the trick is, that a space is same as enter in autocad. The first enter quits the current command and the second space picks up the previous command (point) again.

take a copy (ctrl-c) from your autocad-formatted column in excel, type the command (point) to autocad then paste the inputs (ctrl-v)

You can also draw LINE this way... just start drawing and then copypaste. (formatted with single space)

pay attention, the comma is separation of the coordinates, dot is the desimal separator in autocad. Your windows control panel has an option to use comma as a desimal separator which you must set to be dot.

It would help if thedude could tell us if he solved the problem or not? I like to hear feedback on answers. If not then I had some free time at work and wrote a macro in acad VBA that will read an excel file and plot x,y or x,y,z points. The example file I did is a spiral formed by x, cos(x), sin(x) containing 500 points. If you just fill in the x and y then z is 0. Only catch is that I didn't spend any time making many prompts or anything so the excel file must be named "c:\acadpoints.xls" then just load up the macro file and run it. The zip file is in my gallery.
