Hi boys i definetly need some info from autogyro lovers with more experience than me , im going to build the gyro in my previous post but need some critical info before building ,1.. whats better clockwise or anticlockwise ,any difference?
2,, when using a helicopter type rotorhead and swashplate to control the rotor for fore and aft and left right roll , do you need a horizontal stabiliser ? my glass fuz doesnt seem to incorporate one but i can build it in if need be, though it would look great without one
3,,when sitting on the ground should it sit nose up to give the rotor more positive incidence for takeoff or should it sit at the same angle as in flight
4,, an important one what negative incidence should i put on the blades
This is a 2 blade ,pusher motor type autogyro

My experience:
1) doesn't matter much, I go with the normal direction
for model helicopters (CW, viewed from top)
2) mine did not need one at all
3) +15 is a theoretical minimum, +20 was what I ended up with about the same as in flight ( you want it to fly off the ground with power, not nose up pitch).
4) Symmetrical blades, probably around -5 to -6, cambered (e.g. clark y section) about -1 to -2

nearly ready

thanks for the reply , ill take some of those on board ,shes nearly ready to fly just need a muffler ,made the blades up etc i think i could use some more nose up on the ground and what i really need is the CG ,hanging from the rotor head it sits just slightly nose up , anyone got any ideas where it should be

It Flew

Well its flown no problems ,controls very positive and easy to fly but took a bit of a runup to get airborne, needs more prop ,11x6 3 blade would be good but cant get it in a pusher, and if you let the blades slow down you need plenty of power to get everything flying properly again ,its not a hassle though and flys well, ,jogging pace if you hold the nose up ,might try wider blades soon ,what do you think .

Hi Again guys sorry for the slow reply, Well its had about about 15 flights now and ive made some wider blades for it so it hangs in the air longer at lower rpm , when you come around into the wind and throttle back you get the best whistling noise from the blades and if you pull it to idle it hangs there for ages then slowly decends ,then come in nose high and touches tailwheel first (front wheels still 10 inches off the deck) and touches down with almost no rollout ,will post flyin shots monday,,i love flyin it and im now building a 30 size with a 3 blade rotor will post pics of that too

Sorry guys i have absolutly no idea how to convert video for use on the net but if i can work it out i may do it , Flew it twice today in no wind conditions and it flys past at 1/4 throttle with that great spinning rotor sound , i love that sound , anyway ill try to get some video of it

vintage gyro

Hi citationx thanks for the compliment ,id like to say they are available but thats not the case this is an old german kit from 1975 that i rescued and finished building ,its had a lot of flights now and always generates interest when i fly it.but to build a replica needs on old fixed pitch rotor head and some kind of fuz ,i am working on a 30 size one with a 3 blade head but it needs some more work on the head ,so thats stagnant at the moment.i also have a small electric gyro that is loads of fun and always gets comments of " i want one " and i biult it from this site http://www.mickeynowell.com/ its great fun bye ,BTW heres a pic of it as found

That is bigger than it looked in the first photos. Very nice. One question, it looks like a pulley underneath, is that used to pre rotate before take-off or is it not necessary? What make is it ? (Technically that counts as three questions really)

Hi Dave yep the rotor is a fixed pitch type rotor head as used on helicopters of the era the blades are fixed at -2 deg and the swashplate and flybar control pitch and roll (elev and aileron) and to Dennis that is a pulley underneath with a shaft and one way bearing going up to the rotor head It definatly needs to be prerotated and this is done by winding a 6 mt string onto the pulley which unwinds during the takeoff run , spinning up the head.
