Hello,

anyone tried to change the position of the hidden switch in the hole beside the CF compartment. Take a sharp look, it is a micro switch that can be changed using a very small screw driver. If you change it and switch the 14MZ on it looks for a file on the CF card.
I do not know which file but it seems that it could be connected to a program or service menu.

Has anyone gone further and discovered which filename / what exactly it is for ?

Also I am very interested in "know how" how to modify the software region lock, so far someone mentioned a person in Japan already did it but without letting know more details.

regards Klaus

Could you please explain how the region lock actually works.

I've read snippets on RR, but not a definitive explanation of what it does. e.g. wht happens to a UK 14MZ if you change the RF module from 35 to 40MHz? Does it just refuse to tune, or what? Do the top pilots who have to travel the world not have a way round this?

I don't know if I would ever buy a 14MZ, but i certainly wouldn't spend money on one while it is "hobbled"

how (I think) region locks work
Hello,

so far I discovered, the region lock is build into the 14MZ software. Somewhere coded in the WCE software it is stored this is a Jap, a US or aEuropean model. Therefore the WCE software lets you select based on the internal setting only frequencies which are allowed in this region.
Please do not forget that the syntheziser is in the 14mz and not in the transmitter (actually it is just an amplifier module).
The amplifier module identifies itself to the 14MZ and say which frequency it can handle. I haven't get hold of a US / European module so far, so I do not know what will happen. But what I heard it will just refuse to transmitt anything as the region code of the transmitter module does not match the 14mz region.
So it is no solution to use a foreign amplifier module as the 14MZ still will not generate the frequency of the foreign region.

Hope this did help.

At the end the 14MZ is great but the region lock thing is a strong point to sell it again I do not like this kind of policy at all.

Considering people who are travelling / like champions ? : Mhh I beleave that Futaba created a module that sends a special identifier to the 14MZ and therefore it unlocks the PLL synth restriction.

Thanks for that. So changing the module has no effect on the range of spot freqs that can be selected by the Tx.

I'll follow your experiments with interest. Most peolple won't want to fiddle with their tx while it is still under warranty. However, a year from now....

Thanks

I will be going to Japan on business and was planing on picking up a 14mz. I notice on the Futaba Japan site that the screen menus are in Japanese. Is there a way to change the language on the 14mz from Japanese to English.

The hidden switch is for updating the software and many people have already done so. Do a search and you will find the link.

Like already said... the switch makes the Tx enter update mode.

Using the usb port for something productive... Now that would be fun. Have to try to plug it in the computer and see what it says
