Private Jones had only been in the army for 6 months, and was missing his family.

Bad news came from home that his mother had died.

The Regimental Sergeant Major, who was not known for his sensitivity was given the task of informing Private Jones of his sad loss.

Next day on the parade ground, all the soldiers were lined up for inspection.

The Sergeant Major bellows "JONES, 2 PACES FORWARD, .........YOUR MOTHER'S DEAD"

Private Jones fainted on the spot.

On hearing about this the Sergeant Majors superiors called him to their presence, and tried their best to teach him to be more sensitive in such situations.

Three months later, Private Smiths Mother sadly passed on, and once again, after his sensitivity training, it was up to the Sergeant Major to pass on the sad news.

That morning at inspection, the sergeant Major bellows

"ALL THOSE WITH MOTHERS STILL ALIVE TAKE ONE PACE FORWARDS.......................

NOT YOU SMITH"
