A couple of real HARD lessons here.....no "flat-hatting" and FOD in the cockpit.
Too bad we continue to have to learn these lessons the hard way. Isn't combat bad enough in the risk department.
Dumb is genetic....stupidity is intentional.
Reminds me of the VP-50 P-3 driver in 1980, who, after completing a parachute drop of SEAL's for the Independence Day celebration in American Samoa, decided to stage an impromptu airshow and forgot about the tram cable that promptly wrapped itself around the #3 and 4 props and vertical stab, depositing the P-3 and its crew right into a hotel, which, ironically was where they were staying.
The AMB, in concluding its comments about the accident investigation noted that this same PPC had, just a few months before, performed another improptu airshow (and got away with this one) for his parents during a cross-country flight back to his home town. For that one, he got a slap on the wrist from a "boys will be boys" CO, who by the way, also commented that this pilot "was one of the top pilots in the command...with an aggressive can-do attitude." Too bad he hadn't learned the old axiom..."there are old pilots and there are bold pilots, however there are no old, bold pilots."
