Hi folks,

We’ve had some issues with the clutch bell/pinion gear coming loose from the 10x19x7 bearing (as detailed in the manual in step 1.1). What had been baffling was it didn’t affect all the units. Ultimately, we traced the problem to the technicians not properly shaking the bottle of sealant before starting the job. Thus, in the morning after the tech had done a few, the stuff in the bottle got agitated enough and worked as designed. Yup, plain old human error! Since that phase of assembly was subcontracted, it doesn’t affect the rest of the machine.

The tip off is a ringing sound (just like a bell) as the pinion and clutch bell work loose. Here’s the definitive fix - and it’s easy if you catch it before the bearing’s inner race gets too worn. Just drop the engine, pull the bell and pinion out of the bearing and clean everything with acetone, lacquer thinner, whatever - just make sure it’s clean. Then use red Loctite (I prefer Permatex #765-1146 Sleeve Retainer) and put it all back together (don’t get it into the bearing). Let it sit overnight and that resolves the issue. However, if the inner race is too worn (the pinion gear is hardened so what wears is the inner race of the bearing), then it requires a new bearing. Fortunately, it’s an ordinary 10x19x7 shielded bearing, and it’s inexpensive, but you have to split the frame to replace it.

If the bearing is too far gone, we’ll get you another, but the catch is we need the old bearing back for warranty tracking purposes. We’re pleased it’s not too widespread a problem, but we’re real sorry for the trouble and promise to do better.

Kindest regards,

John Beech

Bell Ringing!!!!!
Hi scotc,

I got this memo after I built mine, but had to drop the engine to take a look and mine was good....
You can check this prior to installing you engine.....
I also found that a little green loctite on the top of the pinion also helped to quite some bearing noise.....
You are goin go to like this heli!!!!! Stan

My wife wacks me upside the head every weekend, she says it's for "GOOD LUCK" yeah sure so I always hear bells ringing... just kidding.

After a gallon or so through Stevens Tiger 50 I noticed the the clutch bell tinging, I pulled the engine and split the case and noticed the pinion spun in the bearing, called John from Audacity and he sent me a new pinion and bearing right away and we were back in the air for the very next weekend.

I used JB weld on the new pinion, filled in the small grooves and put a light coating on the entire pinion end and slid the bearing on with a small twist. I have 4 tanks thought it now and it's solid as a rock, probably need a chisel to get it off but that's ok.

I'm with Foxden, the only ringing I hear is when I smack my head.
My tiger on the other hand is still solid as rock on gallon 4

Just remember -- if the world didn't suck, we would fall off.

Ringing!!!!!
So then what you both are telling me is that the ringing in my head is normal and that I was only hearing things on my Tiger????
Actually, mine was not a problem, but I had seen somewhere that someone had tried the "green stuff" on a pinion, so I figured I would give it a go....and it did make a difference in the sound....

And Foxden, I have never needed a hammer and chisel to take a heli apart..... you see, I just start the "whack" from a much higer altitude and everything comes apart very easily!!!! "Gee Go Figure" that one out...

This is one FUN HELI........ and that is the bottom line..... and I am in this for FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
