finally got my supra back up and running. my next thing is passing emissions. i went to the emissions last week and said i failed all three gas checks. so i took it home and bought an 02 sensor. i installed it and then checked my diagnostics codes and before i installed the censor they read like this.

24-intake air temperature signal

41-throttle position sensor signal

51-air conditioner switch or neutral start switch signal.

52-knock sensor signal.

thats what the code said. then I installed the new 02 sensor and number 24 and 41 went away. 51 and 52 are still there. do 51 and 52 have anything to do with emissions?
i know the air conditioner doesnt work in my car so that shouldnt be a problem with emissions. but the knock sensor signal i have no idea whta that is and cant find it in my haynes book for supras. any car guys help would be awesome. thx

The knock sensor is usually attached to the block somewhere. It senses when the motor starts to "ping" and retards the timing momentarily until the pinging stops. It basically senses vibration (predetonation) in the cylinders. After you find the sensor you can test it by hooking up a timing light and watching the timing while tapping on the block next to the sensor. If it's working properly the timing should retard a little bit while you're tapping.

Knock sensor is screwed into the engine block (sometimes the head) with usually a single wire going to it. It senses pinging or pre-ignition. When it does, it will retard the timing to prevent piston damage. 2 things that come to mind may cause that code. One is, sometimes these sensors go bad from heat depending where they are located. The wiring connector to them will also get brittle and can have voltage drop problems. Keep in mind too, that if your engine has any kind of internal knock noise such as bearing, piston or heavy valve clatter, the knock sensor will pick it up, and can spit the light on. One other note, if you find what you think is the sensor, remove it, and then fluid of any kind runs out you found the WRONG sensor. The sensor screws into a dry blind hole, not fluid passages. Many supra web sites can steer you in the right direction on where the sensor is.

If I remember right, because you failed your emissions and you're bringing it back in after you "fixed it" I believe they don't charge you near as much (if at all).

And even if they do charge you...it's $25 - do it for peace of mind.

Kraken is right, 2nd test is FREE after the initial failed inspection.

Just call the dealership up they will be able to tell you the location of the sensor....I had to do that with the knock sensor on my celica...(BTW on the celica its on the passanger side right above the oil pan to give you a general location....prob no tthe right place on yours but hey it might help) also, find a ma and pop place that does emmissions....then find out what brew they drink....amazing what a 12 pack will get ya...

Ask your Doctor if getting off your ass is right for you.
