Alright, so I'm just learning piro-flips... did a bunch of single ones, (you know, upright all the way round to upright) then tried for sustained which I got right... could do 6 continuous flips while keeping it in the same portion of the sky. Decided to fill the tank and keep trying... second attempt after the fill, in the normal 'dreaded' position of inverted just at the point of the negative collective punch, and the heli exploded. I thought I was watching fireworks. The blades sliced directly through the boom AND the tail drive belt - we found both far from the scene. The heli and associated confetti then rained out of the sky from about 80m up and hit so hard that it snapped the frame off over both front skid mounts... Broke the front skid in half, punched holes in the canopy, split the frame on both sides near the back, etc, etc. Basically a write-off, (considering it's a V1). Luckily it looks like my radio equipment and GY502 gyro got off lightly, although this is still to be tested. I just watched it fall in such disbelief, (it’s the last thing you expect when concentrating so intently on the manoeuvre) that I didn’t even hit the throttle hold,..

I was ultra-bleak, as I loved the fact that I had this beast of a manoeuvre under control at last. Now how am I gonna build up the courage to try it again?

I think the lesson learnt is that if you are going to try this with a stock Rappie 30 then be very conservative with the controls, (don't stir to the extremities and don’t negative punch the collective all the way to the bottom). Also don’t do too many in a row when learning as you degrade the head speed which is looking for trouble. If you know the manoeuvre and can manage the collective properly I'm sure you could do it till the cows come home... Until then tread carefully as the cows are already home, waiting to be milked.

Anyone had any strikes in this manner with a Futura60SE at all? Should I be super careful with inputs or will this machine be able to handle me learning the piro-flip? The next question is do I try and resurrect a 30V1 out of the pieces, (a friend has another frame) or should I just upgrade to a R50V2 if I’m at the point of piro-flipping? Any comments really welcome.

mmm, thanks wingtip.. that's a new take on it that I hadn't thought of. I have been running a 3D setup for quite a while now but have never whanged it into the extremes like I did and must admit that although I checked for binding, I never fully analysed for links touching in the rotation - just never thought they would.

I'll have to make sure the new R50 is fully checked out

hi

i recommend the Raptor 50 v2 and a nice set of CX-dampeners, perfect for 3D.. I boomstriked my R90 during piroflips a while ago, so that´s not just a R30 or 50 problem, it can happen to ANY heli if you push it hard with soft dampening and/or too loose blades.

Right... I've just watched KYB's "How did he do that" and, apart from finding inspiration, I saw what he does with his 60 Futura SE. As I have one, (bought from cliffbarrimore) I might just let that take the fore with regards to my flying - Means a lot more money on gas but it should be able to cope with anything I can throw at it.

Is there anything I should know about the Futura before piroflips, (does the SE require firmer dampeners?). Should I upgrade anything?

Regarding dead Rappie: I don't think I'm gonna replace it but might try to ressurrect it over time which will take some doing but would probably be cheaper than going the 50 route, especially as I'll get sucked into getting a 601 and fast digi servos.

Thanks for your input wingtip - I agree about collective management. I suppose there are lots of pilots out there who can 3D like crazy on a 50 or 90 size machine but that fight themselves around the sky with a 30 or 60 under the hood.

For the rest of you blood-hungry heli freaks ... I'll get some pics of the pieces and post them up here as soon as I can - I can't seem to get the digi camera to work properly and there's no way I'm buying a new one - that's the same price as a Rappie50

Well I wouldn't call that "ANY" heli. After all, the Raptor (especially the 90) is known for having a magic boom strike ability.

what dampers were in the heli?
In my 50v2 i had the red 80 dampers and could do piro-flips as much as i wanted.
now i have CX V1 in my freya, awsome dampers!

BoomStrIkEr.. (did I get the caps right )

I was using the stock-standard dampeners in the rappie. They had been changed once though since I got the model in kit form so they were not totally worn out, but I do think they were the cause of my problems. I'll check out all dampener variations that I can on all of my helis - I won't have this happen again.. I tell you...

The stock are the black one's no?
well i think the minimum for 3D flight in the raptor are the blue, the 70.
i saw a few rappie 30 that doing some nice 3D with the red one's.

OK, good to know!
any way, now days, if i had my 50v2 back, i wond to any hard 3D with the black one's, dont want to take the chance for boomstrike cause usually they dont comes out pretty cheap, even for a raptor
